I was board of re-arranging my work shop, so I stopped to make a cutting board

my last one (just a pine board) finally gave up and split right down the middle, so I thought I'd have a go at a 'real' end grain chopping board.

found a bit of an ash plank

I marked my cutting line for a straight edge

the I pinned a scrap bit of skirting boar parallel to the cutting line (pinned into the waste) and made the cut

with one straight edge, I cut the opposite edge and cleaned up the board in the thicknesser

Then I ripped it into strips

then the strips in half

before gluing up

then when the glue had dried , I cross cut intot strips and glued up again - with the end grain upwards

a bit of sanding with the belt sander, then wet to raise the grain

then a bit more sanding and a coating of mineral oil (liquid paraffin) and we're ready to go

I'm quite pleased with my 1st chopping board !

next time I might use the band saw to rip into strips, as the large kerf cuts on the table saw soon add up to fewer inches on the final board !!!

hope you all enjoyed the little WIP pics

Nicely done
What dimensions were your initial strips and what's the overall size roughly of the finished thing?

Cheers Mike

the squared plank was about 24x6'

the finished board was about 10' x10 1/2'

I ripped into strips just under an inch, to give roughly square and grain sections

Looks exactly like the one i made a few years back.Still going strong.

Nice piece of work there.

very nice, i have been thinking of making an end grain chopping board for a while now.

Woody.

I'd never have guessed that was ash from the final colour, it looks very dark.
What glue are you using there, just WP PVA? I'm having a few gluing issues at the mo :(

Nice, I like.

Nicely done. Certainly more stability there than in the warped ones we have in our kitchen. You've given me some food for thought now, perhaps a great way to use up narrow offcuts!

I was very pleased with the final finish - not like 'Ash' as you would expect !

Glue was just exterior PVA - so no soaking or dishwasher !

In all it took about half an hour max (not including waitng for the glue to dry)

I was amazed at how much it shrunk tho - with the ripping and thicknessing !

obvious when you think about it .... 2.8mm kerf x 10 rips 28mm turned to dust
