I've just bought my first quality plane, a bevel up jack from Lie Nielsen and have just noticed that the adjustable front portion of the sole does not lie flush with the rest of the sole esp near the mouth. This protrusion tapers to nothing at the front of the plane where it is perfectly flush. Ive used it very lightly but am wondering whether I should stop and send it back. I'd appreciate your advice on what to do next.

many thanks

Try loosening the toe piece off and sliding it right forward - there may be some debris stuck between the sole and the toe. I believe both parts are surface ground as one so seems strange that they are not flush.
Hope this helps

Doh! thanks for the tip guys, much better now, though still tiny unevenness remains, however more accurate than me.

Try fully removing the mouth, hit the edges and corners of the back (that's non working side i.e. the side that goes into the plane) movable mouth piece with some fine wet and dry sandpaper, then clean out the resess and the moveble mouth with some naphtha or WD40. Oh and whilst your at it check all parts especially everything that comes in contact with the blade for little burrs left.
