I pre-ordered my Quangsheng #6 from Matthew when I heard the 2nd batch were on their way. I was not disappointed - it is a great plane and after really only a very little fettling was producing very thin perfect shavings.
Having said that - I did not like the Chinese grasstree handles - so I spent a couple of hours with 2 small pieces of English walnut and was delighted with the result. I really do think it is now up there with my LN#5!

Nice job...I think that's a 'must do' mod for anyone buying a QS. I had a look at the No4 at YOKB and that's the thing that would change in the first instance - Rob

I think you've started a trend. Very nice indeed.
I got one of the first NO 6's and I'll be doing the same. They were talking about non stained handles but obviously not yet.

I know this is going to sound like i'm possessed by the spirit of grimsdale but why ?

they are handles, you hold them - so long as they are comfortable what they look like is irrelevant to the performance of the plane.

I could see changing the handles if the suplied ones were uncomfortable or badly shaped or summat, but that doesnt seem to be the case and imo spending time changing them purely for aesthetics seems like a waste of time.

Indeed. But what joy?

Not all woodworking needs to be grim.

true but if the lada had the same performance as the DB9 but just lacked the aesthetics, and you'd bought one for reasons of cost would you spend your time putting on body kit to try to make it look like a DB9, or would it be prefferable to spend the time tuning it and driving it :)

Interesting debate.... but actually this particular walnut came from a tree which my father-in-law and I felled and had planked 3 or 4 years ago and has been used for a whole variety of jobs since - a couple of which have been WIPs on this website like the mother-in-laws sewing box. So it has sort of sentimental value and I just thought that a plane of this quality deserved better then this Chinese grasstree which I did not like the feel of

Hmm , good idea - a walnut knob on the gear stick, nobody will notice that it's still a Lada!

I must confess I am with Moose on this one, but then again I still have the plastic handles on my Stanley 4 and 5. Replacing the handles would take time that I would rather spend woodworking and I consider these planes to be work horses not show pieces.

It's extremely skillful and all that, but YUK!
Not on a plane, please...

And yet it's traditional on guns, and certainly doesn't make 'em shoot better. I suspect there's some cultural conditioning in play.

Well I like some of them. I'm not keen on the flowery patterns. But some of the more geometric stuff floats my boat.

Yes but surely it is only ornamental guns which get such treatment - or your best ones - you don't see jack Bauer with such a design on his arsenal.... and also you rarely see someone out in the forest with their LN or Clifton taking a few shavings for everyone to see!
