PVA as undercoat for larch?

Making some kitchen shelves from larch cladding. Mrs wants them painted black so I'm thinking of using the Screwfix no nonsense black gloss.

I haven't got any undercoat but I have some PVA and wondered if that could be used as an undercoat?

Any advice gratefully received.

Would probably work fine as a thin coat to seal the wood... Pva is very similar to water based paints.... But I'd still test on an offcut just in case.

You probably need dark grey undercoat to get a true black finish - whether one coat of paint (let alone a fairly cheap paint) will do it on its own, I doubt.

Hiyas ... I would give Frenchic paint a go.... possibly two coats ...I covered my electric box outside with it...looks brilliant...
It is water based with chalk and titanium content...

PVA generally makes a good non stick surface once dry. I wouldn't use it as a paint.
