Made this today in an Amphora style(without handles, I've been told not to call it an amphora as it has none  ). Its Ash 9" long and 7" tall on the stand. The stand is carved and ebonised, the supports for the vessel are twigs. It has been coloured with Chestnut stains applied with an airbrush, to give a gradual dark to light appearance as you go up the vessel and a little more colour under the rim. Its my first try with an airbrush.

I will get back to wooden coloured things soon

looks nice JT, how are you thinning down the stains?

Meths,it takes a while to build up the darker areas though when its thinned but thats no bad thing to get a gradual colour change. I should have mentioned I did it with the white stain first.

Good work for a first attempt with an airbrush! I like this piece, it has a orisinal look.
Are you making and hollowing these in 2 pieces or drilling a la bud vase?

Thanks OB :D, the airbrushing was fun.

I hollow them out in two pieces, I did a WIP of how I do them here although the one in the WIP was so cracked it had to be done with very thick walls in the lower half.

Very nice work, but I just don't dig these stains. Wood is wood, to me! Sorry.

Very nice Johnny.

That is very good for a first attempt at airbrushing.

How much did you have to thin the stain to spray it?

Thanks for the replies :D

Wabbit, without the stain this would be a completely different piece,it is made from a very bland piece of Ash, I wouldn't colour something special but in this case I feel it benefits from the colour.

Loz, thanks for the indepth critique!  Glad you like it :D

Ian,thanks, i really enjoyed making this :)

Mike,I didn,t take too much notice with the white stain but it doesn't need much in a bit of meths(there seems to be a lot of 'colour' in it) the purple was a good squirt into about 3ml of meths. Very scientific of me I know

Johnny

You getting all creative again. Lol

You will be cast out soon as a witch practising weird rituals.

keep it up.

The work I mean

This is very tame by your recent offerings JT ;)

I like it, tho as a turner I'm put off by the way you turn these in 2 sections. I know to the paying public is doesn't matter a jot. But my eye can't help but be drawn to the join. The general shape it nice and the colouring works for me. I think you need to ask santa for a roly munro and try your hand at doing these in one.

love the shape - very nice on colour too

minor gripe - large swirl grain

bet you are already thinking on how to add handles

Sorry Johnny !

I dont feel qualified to critique as such ! I know what i like - and i like that ! I also love what you have created as a mount !

ps - I think you have hidden the join very well ! - A non turner will never guess !

Loz

Thanks for all the input :D

Mark, how did you know about the witchcraft

Thanks Doug 8)

Wizer, I know its a bit tame,I did have it mounted on half a cow in an unmade bed suspended in a plastic box over the river thames but then worried that you wouldn't like it,I made this stand instead :p
No need to wait for Santa, I scored me self a Munro, however it wouldn't even go down the neck on this  I like it though although I cant seem to get a smooth finish with it like most people say they get, still i've only used it a couple of times.

Thanks Harlequin but whats wrong with the grain?

Loz, your first comment was good enough for me mate 8)

Thanks Rich :D Not sure why it reminds you of Asterix(I was poor and hard done by, never had any asterix books)

JT

Rich you have it spot on, Asterix it is! I very much like it, particulary the colouring it's a very nice fade. Super piece well done.

Best Regards

Matthew

I knew I should have went to Spec savers, I cant see the join so I'm not a woodturner. I cant see much grain showing either.
So from a layman's view it looks to me as a super piece lovely shape and very well presented. Not being a lover of wood colouring I actully like this piece. It does what you ment to do and livened up a bland piece of wood without going over the top. REgards. Boysie

Thanks Matt, but I wish someone would explain the Asterix thing :?

Thanks Boysie 8)

The middle burn line conceals the join :)
