My father was in the RAF during the last war and brought home a lot of propellers (complete) which he said were from spitfires. I remember as a child seeing a small room full of them. He cut off the blade sections and used them as firewood(!) but kept the bases for turning into tablelamps.
I believe that these were quite common during 50s and 60s and I still have a few as yet unturned, but am running out of them. I turn them into vases and would like to know if anyone has any more of them. Does anybody know of a source?

You often see them turning up in junk — erm I mean — antique sales.

I wouldn't be too keen to carve these up. I bet the value of a Spitfire prop in good condition is better than money in the bank. A guy on the Antiques Road Show last night had bought 2 oak supports from HMS Victory about 20 years ago for £25 each, and now they're worth about £5,000 ea as I recall.
