I have a 26" hand saw, with a Kangaroo trade mark that is progressive toothed. It starts at 5 to the inch, ending at 3tti. Did this type of saw have a particular name or use?

Sounds like a Robert Sorby rip saw, used for fast, rough, cuts along the grain.

Progressive (AKA incremental) teeth were quite commonly used for this purpose at one time.

jap rip saws are progressive, more tpi for starting the cut then low tpi big teeth for ripping fast

I think that's different - AFAIK the intent in the push rip is for the big teeth to be near the heel, where the stroke is strongest.

Further, it's where the saw plate is stiffest, and close to the handle, so there's little chance of the extra force kinking the blade.

But I think all the teeth (bigger and smaller) are intended to be used for the whole stroke.
