I thought i would bring this to the attention of the members of the forum.
I spent some of my prize money that i won for wooden pen, on a 1" Spindle Gouge from The Turners Workshop.

It is on sale at a good low price, and in my opinion i think it is as good a spindle gouge as you will pay at the top end of the price scale. They are HHS and cut very well. Benjamin's Best.

I think it is handy to have a few gouges with different grinds and at this price it is possible.

Sorry Vince but i had to let everyone know about the tools!!!!! :)

Well done for winning the wooden pen contest dermot and congrats on your choice of tools with the winning prize gift from vince. =D> =D>

i must admit at feeling rather let down by the competition, having been let into participation at the last minute by BSM (many thanks) but then not one member bothered to comment on the winning entries.
Shame really, i thought it would have been better and i for one wont be entering next year.
Sorry guys just had to say it how i see it..

meanwhile back to business

I didn't even notice that the competition thread had been updated with the Pen winners till i read this just now Steve,

I feel terrible now

Steve its a shame you feel like that, but as for comments yours seemed to get quite a few, albeit before the event.
The comp was just that a comp and the descisions were the judges and once its over its over. I don't think you should be miffed at not having people say the winning entries were good after the event, after all they won, surely proving they were good  If critique is required on comp pieces then would it not make sense to repost them asking for just that in the normal section?

I hope you reconsider and do enter next time, I felt not enough people entered this time and hope that with the next more will be encouraged to enter as this one worked so well. It was fun and I enjoyed taking part, my only very minor criticism is that I would have liked 2nd and 3rd places announced in each catagory, not for prizes but for encouragement .

So come on Steve don't give up on all these people who are always here to freely give their advise to help others out, I don't think theres a sore loser out there withholding praise for the winning entries, I just don't think the people on here are like that.

Just my 2ps worth

I'm the same as Loz, it's only just now that I've learned that the pen competition has been judged.

Theres been a bit of a delay with collecting the prizes from donors - in retrospect i should have done it piecemeal but i unwisely decided to save despatching them until i had all the prizes in

the prize fairy will be on its way to you and the other winners shortly

I'm sorry you feel that way steve - as far as i'm concerned there may not be a competition next year - or if there is I doubt i'll be organising it.

So far i've had a shed load of abuse for letting one person (you) enter late, Ive had people moaning about the low entrance numbers, i've had people moaning about the judging, ive had people moaning about the fact that the pen comp was judged late (hardly my fault), Ive had prize donors pull out at the last minuite - meaning that ive had to buy some prizes from my own pocket , I've had flak about loz not getting a prize (not from loz i hasten to add but a very abusive email from someone who didnt have the courage to sign their name alledging that this is "racist"), i'm getting (allbeit light hearted) flak for the late despatch of the prizes, and now this

Frankly ive had more than enough - some other fool can volunteer to run it next year :(

BSM,

If this is the case then some people should be ashamed of themselves. You did a great job, and its sad we might not do it again.

You should have mentioned the prize issue though. Im sure the prizes part could have been dropped in favour of virtual prase if we had have known. You shouldn't have been paying for anything.

and however is complaining on my behalf - racist ? - jesus - cop on . Im made up that someones last days might be made a little easier for what Richard has done.

Loz

Hi BSM,
Sorry you feel that way.
I for one am extremely grateful that you went to the time and effort of organising this year's competition. I thought it was run very well, and I enjoyed taking part.
I didn't realise that you had received so much flak over the competition which after all was meant to be a bit of fun I thought. In my experience, the quickest to criticise are the slowest to volunteer to help!!
We will have to see what next year brings, but if you have had so much stick I wouldn't be at all surprised if you don't offer to help next year.

Thanks once again for what you have done for us all,

Malc :D

Bloody hell BSM, that sucks when you've put yourself out and done your best and took a hit to your own wallet

I thought you did a cracking job getting it all organised and I guess no one thought to thank you

So thanks for putting yourself out on this ,as you've got loads of abuse over it thats shameful but credit to you for not telling everyone to (insert Gordon rubbish bloke off the telly Ramseys favorite word here) off earlier, I know I would of.

JT

indeed, you were much more composed than I would have been Pete. Well Done.

I don't know who has been complaining but they ought to be damn well ashamed of themselves. I don't swear very often so I won't start now but the words are in my head if not on the screen.
The competition was done in a way that, as far as I am concerned, was exemplary and all praise to the organizer(s), the judges and anyone who donated towards prizes. I really cannot abide those people who feel they have a right to moan at anyone else about things that are being done for them and the phrase 'it's not fair' has always been banned from our house. I admit I personally may not be always quick to praise and for that I apologise but I am at a loss to understand anyone who has any belief that they have a right to complain. Loz's prize was well deserved and what he does with it is up to him. Hat off to him for that and to Richard for doing it in the first place.
Pete

I am very much surprised by Steves comments.
I did see the winning results for the pen turners just after BSM had put them up but didn't say anything as i was leaving it to the pen turners to comment, and was even more surprised by there not been any
Comments were made before the results by none pen turners, and i just feel there should have been more input from them.
As for BSM getting some stick over it all,i take it that they were all anonymous,if not name and shame, and don't take any notice
The comp was great i thought.
As said prizes are great but don't matter, just as long as there is some feedback about the piece.
I showed mine to George at the bash, and he agrees that i should have won
Only joking.
Anyway well done to all who took part and to the winners.
See you all next year :D

BSM I am sorry that you have been treated in this manner. I did not think that my post would spark off such a whirlpool within the forum.

As for the way you handled the comp i think that you can hold your head high. You had the b**ls to get up and arrange this comp =D> You have done a great job.
Seams to me there are those that can, and those that can't. You most certainly are not a can't!!!!!!!

Everything was looking good from where i was sitting. You should not have had to put up for any withdrawn prize.

Dermot

BSM i am seriously suprised that you are getting flak for running an almost flawless competition, i for one thought you did a stout job. If there is moaning about me winning then i will gladly forfeit the prize, and was the moaning person going to enter into the comp themselves, i probably doubt it.

I am not mad about not getting any responses, just sad thats all, and nowhere did i mention that the kindness and help showed to me via the members come into being, i really like this forum and its members and will just carry on regardless, although it just shows you that you dont really know people.
Sorry for all your trouble Pete, makes mine pale into insignificance.
Name and shame mate, i would..

I'm a bit confused Steve? You just said you didn't get any responses but I've just seen plenty in the original post? Did you expect more than this? Or is it that you think the judges should have commented? I'm obviously missing the point, can you explain yourself a bit better? Sounds like you're pretty angry about something or the other.

wow this is a lively thread. for those who are wondering if it was me that was giving bsm some flack,,,, not guilty.
i thought it was a great comp to boot. everyone who took part did a fantastic job, inc bsm. and for the record.. i was willing to judge the pen section and not enter, as i wanted the guys with less experience to take part. i know that some people dont think that making pens is classed as woodturning. 99.9% of my time is doing pens, but seeing what all the turners have done in the comp it's given me the encouragement to try, yes try something a bit different. that is what i think comes out of competitions. well done all the entrants.. you are all winners.

I know just what you mean. You can't please all of the people all of the time.
I a committee member of a woodturning club. The comments and criticism from the same few members can be offputting. There is always plenty of members who lend a hand and give a bit of praise.
I had enough from one person and said that he should come on the committee and do things properly. Have only seen him once since.

I do not enter competitions but enjoyed seeing the entries and the comments.

Please don't let the few spoil it for the many. From the comments sofar the people who matter think you did a good job.

Fred
