We wish to install a pergola/rose arch type thing, and would like a round top. We will have it in 3" pressure treated timber and I can do everything except make the curved top pieces. How much would they cost to get made up? I am thinking of two semicircular arcs id ~45" where the timber is 3" square. (Does that make sense? )

Because of the peculiarities of the site, and the desire for a specific width ready-made ones will not really work (and the quality of most seems abysmal).

I do not even want to think about trying to cut the curved pieces by hand.

Any ideas?

Do you not fancy laminating them up- prob not that difficult?

Maybe. Never done anything like that though. I am mainly a carver and have no 'big' tools like bandsaws. I guess laminating would require a 'former', lots of clamps and some exterior grade (20 years?) glue. I have some clamps, but cutting the former might be a problem. I have no idea about the glue.

It is worth mulling over though......

Ah yes. It wouldn't be much fun hand ripping it. Not sure on former with it being a half circle but sounds like you may not be set up for it anyway.

Is there anyone on the forum local to you with a bandsaw?

I am not sure - I am in (very) West Somerset. If there is anyone local fancies a small (paid) job that would be a solution. There is a bit more than just cutting - I think each arc may require more than one bit of timber (unless 51" x 26" x 3" is a feasible size for treated timber**) and some method of joining the pieces of the arc.

**max size of arc. id = 45" + (2 x 3") for thickness = 51". Half that for the height of semicircle = 21.5".

Entirely correct. And since moving I have no real workshop (I will be getting a big shed but not for a while).
