Does anyone have a pet supplier of pre-veneered panels? I'm thinking of just a few square feet of birds-eye maple or similar. I can find bulk suppliers easily enough (I work next to Total Laminate Sytems) but for a small order who's good?

Seeking out a forum member near you with a vacumn press may be a good idea. I dont think many commercial companies would be interested in such a small order.

Got a vacuum press, it's the consistency I'm after, if they're not a ridiculous price I'd consider buying them in instead of making myself

What consistency problems are you having? It should be possible to get perfect results everytime with a vacumn press.

It's more a potential concern with jointing the veneers properly over a long length, admittedly this is not a problem I'v had before, but if I'm going to enter a competition...

Are we a fan of Point Break perchance?

Hi Aidan I am a Fan of Point Break. How did you Guess :D

If its for the competition I think you really ought to join the veneer yourself.

This is how I joint my veneers basically it is a 2.4m long shooting board that is used with a No7 Jointer. Its is constructed with 2 pieces of 50mm angle iron with a 30mm square section of solid bar sandwiched between. There are some M12 bolts that screw down onto 2 pieces of MDF to get pressure all along the line of cut so the the veneer doesnt move or chips out. You can do 2 leaves or 24 leaves of veneer at a time.

It works really well and produces excellent results as long as the plane is very sharp.

It could easily be converted into a smaller size which is suitable to be used at the bench.

Cheers

Well, I'm intending to buy a low angle jack plane when I go to the states in a week or so (swine flu permitting) so I may replicate someting similar.
