Well, after a horrid morning at work (strimmer Vs dead fox cub = facefull off nasty ) got showered and changed then out to turn some stuff round, first picked up a bit of willow that's still quite wet, didn't get it as thin as I would like but willow is hard to keep the bark on at the best of times, then a little goblet from what I think is a eucalyptus

A week back I picked up a small trunk from some garden variety of Japanese Maple, a chap had killed it off by pruning it back too hard. I thought it would be hardwood, turns out it's ridiculously soft and picks up dings and scratches with no effort at all. Bl**dy stuff!

I was planning on giving these two vessels to the guy who let me have the wood, but as you might spot in the pics, the one on the left has got another scratch from me carrying into the shed. I'm miffed to say the least and I'm not wanting to put any more time into it.

I made another couple of Oak cartridge keyrings too (probably what marked the little bowl). Ah well, tomorrow's another day.

They still look great, I find CA glue is great for hardening wood that's too soft, I buy the blister packs of 10 from Poundland type stores, saturate the wood once close to desired shape/size then you can get nice cuts followed a very nice polish.

Hehe, I'm all about quantity at the minute after the summer fair I can go back to quality first

Had a small eucalyptus crotch and decided it would make a nice live edge bowl, was looking great right up to the point of removing the tenon then it became a funnel

Once I had calmed down I picked up a couple bits of oak and turned a potted podlet and a normal podlet, would have liked a thinner stem on the normal podlet but it was spinning like a wet noodle and I had to hold it with one hand once I got half way along it, using a gouge one handed isn't easy, lucky I have a big belly to help lever the gouge

Mine is very plain compared to above.
Off cuts of 9 by 1 and 1/4 construction timber, a giant Genga set for little one.
3x5x15.25 mm. A coat of Danish Oil and towering building begins.

Small cabinet for in the workshop as part of a never-ending quest to make space.... And as an exercise for making some cabinets for in the house.
Made from poplar ply - very light and easy to work with but for builds for in the house I would add some form of edge banding (or go Birch ply). Doors are a different plywood: Powerplex. Eucalyptus core with some hardwood veneer. Edges look better, which together with the slightly lower price made me buy it, but lots of small breakout when sawing it (with a good track saw and backing...). Easily visible when zooming in.
Thanks to Peter Millard's concealed hinge video for saving me hours of trawling through websites with too many types of different hinges (although I suppose they will all have their use).
It was intended as two cabinets with one or more shelves in between, but looking at it now I wonder whether I should perhaps add a door to the middle bit - maybe later.

Just the 2 podlets and a funnel got a few bits of green oak cut ready for more podlets today, they're quick and rustic so don't need sanding or finishing

I bought a second hand lathe locally ( Paimpol ) Sunday before last.I only need it for making one thing ( twice ), but I'll probably keep it and play ( haven't used one since arriving in France over 30 years ago ). The person who sold it to me spoke some English, had other items ( which I left ) but threw that book in. Lovely work in there, some highly unusual, kind of work and methods combining turning and sculpture that you rarely see. Struck me as the sort of thing you'd be interested in , if you haven't seen it already ? ..Could give you food for thought. I'm keeping my copy, you should be able to get hold of one ( library if they still have them in the UK ) or bookshop or "the river". Not "quick" stuff by any means, but very interesting..well IMO .

Only had 2 hours today so made 2 potted podlets from green oak, I put oil on the pot and left the stem and top to dry and do what it wants.

Its great that Stig posts so much but why so few other contributions on this section and under projects. Surely more useful to see what and how others have actually made something rather than procrastinate over how flat a plane sole should be

( probably just as well as some need a bit more sanding).

Something quite basic from this evening, a little honey dipper made from a piece of Plum tree. The bit of wood was destined for the fire due to the insect holes.

Finally finished a pair of 'cuksas' for my son and his girlfriend. They are made from elm from one of three trees I had to have cut down as they had succumbed to Dutch Elm disease and risked falling into the road. Mounted half logs on lathe to turn the inside of the cup then cut out on bandsaw and used belt sander to rough out shape of outside. My son gave me a great set of flexcut carving tools a few years ago and these were amazing for tidying up outside and shaping the handles (their initials). Luckily my son is left-handed so I could put his L on the left but I had to add an O to give a bit of support (and an extra finger hole). I started on a third (not yet finished) for me and used this to test effects of filling with boiling water. Absolutely fine!
