Had about 40 off cuts of 4 x 2 10 inch long. usually I would have just burnt them on wood stove. So iset myself a challenge to make something with them, here's what I came up with

an octagonal planter yakisugi and oil finish

Only a bit of workshop furniture but delighted to have finished my planer cabinet for the Kity 636. Houses a small HVLP chip extractor to serve the P/T and has space for a small cupboard.

Overbuilt to deal with the weight of the machines etc. small enough to fit snugly in my 6x8 workshop.

Sculpture belonged to the client, he put it on there before I managed to get the camera out. It kind of suits the table though…I think..

This little oak bowl from an offcuts of the last big bowl I did almost ended up in the firewood pile, shaping the outside was fine, a little hard in spots but overall it behaved, the second I turned it round I had problems, it's so hard it actually burnt the tip of my gouge and I got nothing but dust the whole time I was hollowing here's a couple of pics and believe it or not they are 2 hours of cut/sharpen/cut/sharpen, I was lucky to get a few mm before having to resharpen

The shine is from wet CA, a section was very punky and spalted and I filled cracks with gold glitter again so rather than risk staining I soaked it into the whole thing, here's the finished thing, only 6inches across

Yeah ha that was me - such a nice guy and what a great experience that was as well! Honestly completely surreal. I always assumed the videos were very staged but genuinely it's exactly as it seems!

beautiful! you are a natural, make sure you save a piece of your work every so often, then you can look back over the years and see how you change things, as you go along on your woodturning adventure.

i’m just going to make a big pile of dirt into a road today!
if i look really close i can see my house on the other side of the lake.

So this morning I was informed that we are going out tomorrow to a friend's 21st birthday party and that I need to make her something nice so I had to rush a little but managed to make 2 pretty decent gifts, an oak vase with glitter filled cracks and a captive ring goblet from a piece of pine that smelt wonderful while working.

wowzer! they are over the top. don’t you love it , when you can just whip out and make a few gifts. i’m the wife’s go to for presents all the time. The way i look at it it’s saving me money as it’s just my time!

Totally agree, hard to beat handmade one of a kind presents, that's the great thing about wood, no matter how many I make, even using the same wood no two will be the same because the grain is always different

That’s why many use ceramic tip tools when removing the inside of bowls especially on end grain, just needs finishing because they are basically scrapers And of course Oak case hardens.

I like building small boxes, they're fun and a good chance to try new techniques. On one of my woodworking YouTube binges, I came across a video of someone making a miniature Japanese toolbox and I thought the design was awesome so had to try it.

The locking mechanism is really cool.

Wood is a mix of whatever thin scraps I had for the most part. The handles are made from Padauk, which was insanely difficult to work with which is why I didn't use it anywhere else in the build.

Looking forward to making the next one with maybe a few tweaks to the design. Want to make a larger one too at some point.

Okey Dokey you all know I have this thing for pallet wood and I am totally nuts building my new camper trailer from pallet wood but good news!

I have finally got the colour sorted out and well lets just say it brings out the hidden secret of pallet wood when treated correctly with the respect its owed.

My colour scheme is now sorted ... 2 passes of the blow torch, a coat of rich red mahogany stain, and two coats of good quality yacht varnish
and here is the results and my test piece

The finish is BIN for edges then two coats cheap undercoat/primer all over with roller then dulux trade satinwood layed on thick with a brush.

A WIP for Monday.

Tiny tondo mirror 8"ø, turned and carved from green oak, then left to season and distort a little for effect. Currently gilding with 24k Italian gold leaf and getting ready for the mirror to be silvered and installed.

I'm probably being extremely dense this morning but BIN?
Fantastic cabin bed though. Would have loved to make one for my grandsons but at 15+ now it would have to be a long one.
