Looking for plywood 1/64” thickness at a reasonable cost. A 36 x 12“ is about £30 which is a bit pricey. Preferably a supplier in the north east area to collect would be good but I may have to consider alternatives as I’m having trouble getting it.

Any suggestions appreciated and even an alternative to the plywood of same thickness. Colour doesn’t matter.

Thanks

that can't be right, 1/64" is only 0.4mm thick! which is thinner than most veneers.

Here's one supplier - it ain't cheap though! FWIW, a 36 x 12" for around £30 seems cheap to me - it's a very specialist product and it's always been expensive - maybe seek a cheaper alternative?

Thanks for the reply, the ply isn’t cheap I think it’s just gone up by about £10 apparently due to Covid. Postage costs are rediculous.

The plywood is a base material to cover with thin foam, the shape is then covered with leather or suede forming a lining for boxes. The plywood is strong enough to hold the shape until glued onto the inside of the box.

Shame you want so thin. When I taught we used to buy 1.5mm from K & M. It looks like that is as thin as they go.

The job sounds like making a "pad" for a box containing jewellery or similar - years ago when I ran a printing business we supplied a company with a heavy card (~350um ) as the base material that he then applied foam and very thin "velvet" type material. [We also supplied printed inserts for the boxes]

I have been using 1/64th for years now on my model gliders and get 1' x 4' sheets of birch ply for about £42 a sheet, so £30 is about right.

This lot may be able to help? Or if they don't sell it then to put you in the right direction.

If you get the ply then it cuts very easily with either a sharp blade or scissors.

1/64" plywood and cheap in same sentence is an oxymoron  Also, from experience, that thin plywood buckles easily, so it needs good support.

Yes this model shop has the ply and is probably the only stockist in the north east, they are expensive though but isn’t everybody.

It is a pad type but it lines the complete box and any fitments. Tried card in the past but maybe it wasn’t 350um but not familiar with card specs and thickness. Hobby shop have card so may try it again. Thanks

Try Cornwall Model Boats. I've just ordered some 4mm with p&p @ £5

As previously suggested modellers do use 0.4mm (1/64") quite routinely. A good supplier is SLEC Ltd who will sell you 1/64" birch ply 36" x 12" at £21.16 including VAT. I'm not sure if they will roll for shipment? If not, you would probably be advised to add a more rigid product to your order. You'll find SLEC at SLEC UK Ltd
