Plug cutter recommendation

I need to fix down the last oak floorboards in the run and plug-cutting is the way to go, I think.

Any recommendations as to make and also the drill/countersunk thingie that prepares the hole in the oak floorboard for the screw?

I have some of the diston brand as sold by axminster. They're ok, I haven't noticed any problems with them. The veritas are often well spoke of.

PS With the distons, you can buy the cutter and the pilot/c-sink.

Roger I would like to recommend the Veritas plug cutters. Here,

These are easy to use, and I like the fact that they are slightly tapered. I simply drill a hole with a forstner bit after drilling the pilot hole for the screw.

I have the Veritas tapered one which I think is excellent. I also have the Disston set from Axminster which is supposedly matched to the counter-bore but I always find the plug slightly undersize. The taper on the Veritas one means that the size not an issue.

There is a definite knack to using the Veritas one in a cordless drill as opposed to a drill press, as it has 4 prongs which can dig in if not handled carefully.

I use a Trend Snappy combined pilot and countersink with my Veritas plug cutter, but I imagine the Disston ones would fit.

I use either trend or veritas plug cutters. For the counterbored hole i use either an 8 or 10mm dowel drill that you can use in the router for a perfect hole bored to the exact depth required.

Wealden do a nice plug cutter, at a price. The Disston things are about the best for counterbore/pilot combos, but buy spare pilot drills for them, they do like to snap.

Remember the shellac the plug in, rather than glue trick. Helps future removal no end!

It's for when Jake has drilled through the central heating pipe underneath the floorboard and he has to move the fixing hole :wink: :shock:

Another vote for the tapered Veritas cutters. I've used cheaper sets from Screwfix and other places in the past, but they aren't that accurate and often leave a thin, dark glue line around the outside. Where they may claim to cut 16mm plugs, they don't, they're actually a couple of mil smaller! You don't get that with the Veritas cutters. :wink:

Nothing more than using shellac as a 'glue' with a breakable bond,so the plugs and screws are easier to get out if you need to get a board out, or change the floor, etc.

Ok..I'll go with Veritas. On looking at the Disston link, I realise that I had some of these a while back but found that they never kept a very good edge in oak.

I would drill the hole with the router first. When drilling the through hole it it will self centre with the point left from the dowel drill or you could use something like this.
