Which end do I plant?

they are at present in soak for an hour, then instructions just say plant.

Planting Asparagus is a very involved process. You have to create a tench with a mound in the middle. The shoots are draped over the mound with half the roots going down each side and the small single shoot facing up. You really need to get some specialised advice. The Grow Your Own forumis good.

You do realise that if you plant you're going to have to eat it, in which case you'll have to have your taste buds removed first :D

Asparagus would easily be in my top 20 foods. Love the stuff

but only the white ones, not the green ones

that is the difference between mainland europe and the UK

in Europe they grow them completely underground, so they stay white, in the uk the let them grow above the ground, so they become green

Never seen white asparagus soup!

Green is the way to go.

(The only snag is that the instructions say not to crop until after two years. )

Have you heard the one about ordering Asparagus at the Restaurant? When the waiter arrived with the dishes said. "whose asparagus?" followed by i'm Asparagus No i'm Asparagus i'm Asparagus.

hp.sa. I like`Asparagus especially fresh and in season. Bentley where they do the woodworking show sell it when in season its great.

Regards

Me too!

Not the sort of stuff you can eat if you have a weak bladder though, I'd have thought.

DW, I'm so pleased you are planning for "2 years away". In most posts you seem to be threatening to kick the bucket at any moment

Lurker, everday to me now is a bonus, someone the other day did say to me they reckoned I would make the century, but my knees last week said no.

We planted some out last November

The bed has been pretty much waterlogged for the last few months and we had assumed it was dead, but then at the weekend, on the off chance we had a look and saw this

so very satisfying to see it actually growing. It's one of eight shoots and we hope to get more, but apparently we can only take one shoot from each plant this year, full crop next year.

Is it just me or does that first picture of Simon's look like he's excavated some facehuggers from the Alien films?

I had taken the photos as we blog a lot of what we do around the house and garden for the benefit of my other half's family who all live abroad and the title of the post was The Aliens are Coming, for just that reason.

It was also a play on the name of a Spanish song (my other half is Venezuelan) which translates as The Martians are Coming, which someone had used in a comment on another blog post of us in our bee suits. Anyway, it was amusing to us... :D

Congratulations Simon, will accept an invite to next years BBQ.

Would be a bit of a trek for you..

I saw your last question over on the gardening forum. The ones we planted (4 different types) all said to bury them to 30 cm. I can't remember whether that was to the top of the mound or the bottom, but I suspect a lot deeper than you currently have them, based on how you worded the question.
