I am putting together a table of timber yards, with information from members who have actually visited the yards. Can you PLEASE HELP with information about Chiltern Timber @ Hemel Hempstead?

Are they hobby friendly?

Can you self-select or is it by appointment?

Will they deliver?

Do they have online ordering?

Are prices displayed at the yard?

Do they sell domestic hardwoods?

Do they sell other hardwoods?

Do they sell softwoods?

Do they sell manufactured boards?

Do they sell turning blanks?

Are they a one-man-band or a small, medium or large yard?

Will they cut to length to fit in your vehicle?

Do you have any comments?

Are they hobby friendly?

Ish. They are normally very busy and at certain times finding someone on the floor to give you a hand can be a challenge. If you are only selecting a few boards they might try to rush you through but they will generally give you the help you are after.

Can you self-select or is it by appointment?

You can just turn up and self select.

Will they deliver?

Yes.

Do they have online ordering?

Yes but they have a greater selection in the warehouse than they indicate online. Bizarrely certain items are had more cheaply if you order online - even if it’s on your phone standing at the counter!

Are prices displayed at the yard?

For certain items yes but not all. They do have a shorts bin with individually priced boards but these are expensive for what they are.

Do they sell domestic hardwoods?

Yes

Do they sell other hardwoods?

Yes - a fairly good selection including some wenge and ipe.

Do they sell softwoods?

Yes - loads.

Do they sell manufactured boards?

Yes - loads

Do they sell turning blanks?

Not sure but their website says they do (I’m not a turner)

Are they a one-man-band or a small, medium or large yard?

Medium I’d say.

Will they cut to length to fit in your vehicle?

Yes but they do charge for this service. I tend to bring my own saw and cut in the car park.

Do you have any comments?

A good selection of hardwoods but pricey to my mind. Open on Saturday morning to midday.
