Hi, my daughter had a new kitchen and gave me the offcuts so I made her this platter - it's about 21" diameter. Trouble is she wants here hubby to get the rest of the kitchen to the same finish

Dave,

Just tell her he'll never get a lathe big enough to swing a 3 metre worktop

Like the platter :D

Hi Vulthoom

It looks good when it's finished but it's a beggar to turn as it is, as you would expect, very, very dry and hard, so there lots of dust. It's all little blocks so there's lots of end grain and it's hard to get a shaving. It's about 4 mm thick.
Cheers Dave

Yes, but bottom line 'you did it', and made a good job of it so be proud of the achievement.

What finish did you use in the end? hope your daughter treats it well if it's to reside in the kitchen else it could be coming back for a re-furb at some time.

Hi guys, thanks for you kind comments.

Chas I finished it with several coats of Liberon Finishing oil and use webrax to denib between coats. Then I gave it a coat of WoodWax 22 and polished it with with a brush held in a drill. It inly took about a couple of hours to turn, the finishing probably took me at least a couple more as I hand sand with the grain after each grit up to 1200 grit. . I also find that I have to go back to say 320 grit after the first oiling as the grain raises slightly with the grain with each

Very nice Dave,

I have done a few platters, but can never get a flat bottom to the inside ( if you know what i mean ) - I thyink i need to invest in a straight end scraper - Been reading "Peter Child".

Did you grip it with that tiny recess ???

That's par for the course Dave, finishing even if it is only a couple of little spots often takes longer than the basic forming, especially with 'interesting' wood.

Hi Loz
Thanks. Getting the bottom right was a challenge. the recess is about 3mm and it is just the right size for my 150mm jaws. I measure it carefully so the jaws are just at their optimum holding size, which is when there is a gap of about 3mm between the jaws so it holds all the way round. Bit scary though!

Thanks Jenx for kind comments - not too hard just a bit scary when it's going round at 800 rpm i worked it to be about 50 miles per hour at the edge.
Cheers Dave

Brave Man !

I do my bowls that way ( recess ) - but nothing ever that diameter. I tend to go compression mode on larger objects - not sure if this is the right thing to do though - but makes me feel more confident - still learning myself !

Again - Very nice,

Hi Loz

I don't know about brave but I do stand out of the way when I turn it on!

I usually use a spigot, again to the optimum size and then reverse chuck it. But with something this size I can't reverse chuck so go for the recess and decorate it. If you get the diameter right you don't get any marks from the jaws either which makes finishing a doddle.

I'm still learning too. Time is not my friend - I could do with another 5 weekend days in the week!
Cheers Dave

Did the same thing recently - son-in-law has now dutifully cleaned and re-finished the worktops to match.. 8)

Dave,

Was the worktop already segmented like that - or did you do it for the platter ?

Nice platter i've never seen one made from that material before, and from your account I dont think I will be trying ,lovely finish as well a real pointer that the finish can make or break the piece. Congrats. REgards Boysie.
