Mike, I am trying to edge the wood. No way will I try to run a small piece of wood through the thicknesser while its standing on a wonky edge.

PAC ....(sfunny, but thats my wifes initials), I think you might be right. It annoys me that I cant do something simple, but I cant go on getting tapered wood.

Thanks for all the help.

Hello,

If you have wonky edges on 2 opposite sides, you could never expect the stick to end up parallel in width, after what is essentially a surface planing operation. Use your router table to surface one edge, then bring the other parallel on the lunchbox thicknesser. If you just have one wonky edges, then just use the thicknesser. You are making life unnecessarily complicated for yourself.

Mike.

Just wondering if you've already got an electric hand planer you could adapt

This one came with a fence for rebating. The piece of wood screwed onto the fence could be alot bigger to keep the planer square to the edge.

Another option, once I get some time spare. Dont you just hate half term?
I hate having a million and one of my own jobs to do with only a few minutes of time to do it. Gonna make some windows again today- Again again again again.

If the hand planers not something you use very often you might not miss it being permanently set up ? Doesn't look the easiest of things to make though.

The electric planer is a bit of an uncontrolled monster in my hands. My lack of hand control means it takes uneven lumps as it crosses the wood.
That just might be a good use for it, except then it will take up more shelf space, which I am now very short of.

I honestly wouldn't bother Bob, more trouble than it's worth. I made one a couple of years ago, wasn't too difficult a build. I made 4 points of levelling for the infeed, but aligning it to take a few thou off in one pass was the devils own job, and the amount of vibration transferred to the hand is excruciatingly painful after a short while.

Just as a matter of interest, and if you have mentioned this in a previous thread I apologise, what is the problem you have with hand planing. I wonder if it may be better to try to address this problem than attempt to bypass it with complicated technical options. It seems that if you could use a plane then the problem could be fixed in a few strokes.

Chris,
arthritic thumbs. unable to grip securely, and pain after a very few back and fore strokes.

hand planing, along with hammer and chisel, are no longer in my future.
Power tools or nothing I'm afraid.

I'm sorry to hear that Bob. It must be frustrating for you. Using a nice sharp plane is one of the joys of the craft IMO.

I think I've seen people use upturned planes before. Perhaps a jack in a vice with a short fen.........

Something like that.

I thought it might have been a bit easier than swinging around a heavy lump of metal.

Not that I’m doubting him at all but I know for a fact that bob can hold a can of beer with no problem whatsoever :)

As long as I can empty it before my grip gives out!.

i'm planning on a yandles trip in december. From memory theres a pub in the village so we could revisit that theory?

Sounds good bob. I’ve never been to Yandles and have heard it’s quite a place. I’ll need to make a day of it though as it’s a bit of a trek from St. Albans!
