Anyone got a good source for planer blades (especially HMS260 owners) - I need a spare set. Rutlands want £50 a set and D&M £60, which seems extortionate for two 10" by 3/4 inch bits of HSS with a ground edge.

Has anyone done the disposable blade conversion by the way? Two sets of edges for £21 doesn't sound too bad.

And sharpening blades, anyone got anywhere to recommend, apart from the old hardware store routine?

Thanks, Jake

depending upon where in london you are jake, i might be able to sharpen for you, i have the planer blade attachment for my tormek, always prepared to try.

A link to this company was posted on the forum a year or so ago, and I have ordered 2 sets of blades for a HMS260 of them at about £21-22 a go. They are HSS re-sharpenable and every bit as good a quality as the originals.

Oddly enough Halfords sell blades. They are agents for the SIP range so if they fit yours they could be handy, no postage to pay but usually require Halfords to place a special order because unlikely to be in stock.

Thanks all.

Philip - top link, I missed that. Nice people, £20.50 a pair, from stock. And a set of TCT blades for the mountain of teak I have to plane up shortly. That set was a more wince-worthy £80, but as against £187 from D&M for the Scheppach ones, still a bargain.

Paul - thanks for the offer, but I'm way the other side of London, New Cross. Couldn't get more opposite, although I can still see the stadium from the top of our hill.

DW, the SIP is a EB clone, and I think they have different size blades, a few mm deeper in section. But thanks, would never have thought of Halfords!

And the HSS blades arrived in the post this morning - so very quick. They look the part and are nice and sharp. Have the joy of changing blades to come.

Sadly, Method tools as per the link from Philip above are on annual shut down til the end of August.

Did you find any other good suppliers for planer blades?

thx

Try any saw doctor or industrial tooling supplier. Im London I'd give NLS a shot. Don't know what their prices are like but they are bound to be better than £50.

spoke to Carbide, very helpful and friendly service, would highly recommend.

New blades in the post with an invoice.

Thx for the recommendation Den

I think i'm coming to the end of my first set of blades, im getting alot of tearout on some cherry i'm planing up. I have a record pt260 machine which is supposed to have resharpenable blades, not knowing the differeance in looks between the different types of blades, is it possible to tell from this photo if it is resharpenable.

I'll have to buy a second set as spares, but if it is i can send this set off to be sharpened.

For some reason record don't seem to sell blades so i guess i could get a set of blades for an EB or SIP equivalent

My disposable blades that came with the SIP P/T could be described as lightweight whereas resharpenable are heavier.

Halfords are agents for SIP blades if their blade is any good to you but you will most probably have to place a special order with your local branch.

Not too sure - question is does your machine have adjusters in the block? The disposable types I've seen are very thin (less than 2mm) and are held on a backing carrier, or very narrow (10mm or so) but anything other than that should resharpen, although you might be able to extend the life by simply honing them.

Having a second set is always a good idea in case yo nick the forst ones on an inclusion.
