I have just aquired a smoothing plane and a cheap spokeshave Neither of them cut very well out of the box. So I thought I would hone them myself they both seem to be ground to 25deg do I keep at 25deg when honing or are they the same as chisels and need a further angle of 30deg as well?

I'd go for 30 degrees-makes honing quicker and gives a stronger edge.
Cheers

Thanks Philly for answering my query.
I had a go at sharpening the plane yesterday, first I flattened the back of the blade then honed the blade to 25deg then honed a microbevel (if thats what you call it ) at 30deg seems to have worked ok

I can now get thin even shavings when I use it
Thanks again for answering my post
