I have been given an old wooden coffin plane with a rather beat up 2" Marples Hibernia plane iron and cap iron.
The plane is split and full of woodworm and will be chucked away but the iron is salvageable though somebody has knocked seven bells out of the top and the cap iron!! Why do people do this??
The back is not too flat but am thinking of converting it into a scrub plane iron which will remove some of the defects - but does a scrub plane iron have to be that flat anyway?
Are cap iron screws/bolts a standard thread - need to find a replacement?
I have been using the supposedly super cool Norton 3X grindstone I bought at Yandles - I still managed to blue an old chisel so care is still needed even with this one!
