I finally got round to making a plane hammer based loosely on the one in David Finck's book, but I do not like the idea of hitting wood with metal (even brass) so modified it as shown here:

Made from a piece of 5/8" brass tube and a modified ash handle I bought for 90p from Proops. I used some Box for the insert and a tiny wdge of oak for the wedge. The brass is 2.5" long so quite small.
With hindsight, square sectioned brass would have been much easier to use (no turning).
Took me about an hour in between gardening and decorating! :)

Very nice, for some reason I'm greatly afeared of metal work so mine is all wood.
Purple heart and Ash and again just a couple of hours work.
