I've been using my wooden planes (old but cleaned & fettled) over Christmas and love the way they work once set up.

Rather than wacking the delicate bits with a claw hammer, I now think I need to make a proper hammer and am looking for design ideas.

I seem to remember seeing one by Philly & also Racers but I'm damned if I can remember what they look like.

Anyone got any pictures drawings or ideas ??

Here we go..............

Ta Philly,

I thought you had one that was more to it than a small mallet

I thought I saw one that had a lump of brass at one end, but maybe that was Pete's.

I was thinking of turning a mallet shape & then at one putting two flats on it so as to hit the wooden wedge (of the plane) with the centre of the mallet but miss the iron - if you see what I mean.

What do you reckon about internally weighting the head?

Hi, Lurker
Mine is a piece of brass bar with a PTFE end. I have some hex brass bar that you could have a lenght of if you wanted to make a brass one.

Hi Pete,

Ta for that!!

I thought yours was a brass insert rather that a PTFE insert, As I saw yours & Phillys on the same day maybe that explains why my memory had mixed them up in more ways than one.

I think a bastardised version between your's & Philly's is on the cards as I dont have the machinery to do one like yours.

Strangely I've already made the handle and its a dead ringer for yours.

I use a 25mm nylon headed Thorex tapometer to adjust mine..have to say tho' that the ones in the pic do look pretty :) - Rob
