Placement of Letter Box on a Front Door

I am indebted to the writer of a letter to today's Times for pointing this out. I've seen this shot a thousand times and never noticed;

The letter box is in the wrong place!

It should be in the central rail, not chopping the central stile in half, thus weakening the door.

Apart from anything else, it just looks stupid!

Was once two doors before letter boxes were invented, and when politician got fatter & fatter (think John Prescot) they made the door a one piece thing so the fat bastards could get in. :lol:

It'd be interesting to hear who did it and if it's been the same door since the house was built.

Further more, I wonder if this has been done of purpose? Perhaps there is extra security built into the central rail, making it impossible to put a hole through.

Could be a false letterbox - for security reasons, and placed there to keep the symmetry/proportions.

There are two doors. When one needs painting, they swap them over.

Paul you are quite right about there being two doors. It was my Dads bosses Dad's company that were commissioned to paint the door (2) of them that is. All letters are delivered somewhere else.!!! And well as for the need of a letter box you can make your own mind up, that's all I can say.

I'm sure I remember hearing somewhere that the door was actually made of steel and kevlar :?

Also that it can't actually be opened from the outside.

Hi,

If you watch the door opening you will see from the reflections its totally flat so I recon its a steel blast proof door.

I do remember a news item about it being taken away to paint.

After the IRA tried to launch a grenade/rocket attack on Downing Street a few years ago, all the doors and windows were made bomb and bullet proof. So its not an original wooden door.

I reckon its a steel door too so the front you see is a sheet of steel so no worry that the letter box would weaken the rail.

I remember around ten years ago working for a big carpentry/joinery firm up town and they had to fit one to a casino I never saw the door in question but was told it cost £28,000 :shock: you wouldnt want to mess up hanging that :lol:
