It seems to me as though the small lathes used at the beginning of the process are run by a very slack belt- the chap just stops the shaft with his hand and holds it back while opening the chuck. Most elegant!

Sorry Doc, but I couldn't find a link to the videos. Just to the text describing them. I think I clicked on just about every link I could find, but no videos!
