It seems to me as though the small lathes used at the beginning of the process are run by a very slack belt- the chap just stops the shaft with his hand and holds it back while opening the chuck. Most elegant!

Couldn't help wondering if the circular saw dude retired with the same number of appendages he apprenticed with...
