All the photos I have on various threads are hosted by Sony Imagestation. Just read that this is to close from 1st Feb 2008, and that no new photos may be uploaded from 12th November.

Presumably after 1st Feb all my photos in various threads will disappear. thought I'd mention it just in case others are also with Image Station. :(

That's the second one to go. Any suggestions for a decent alternative, there's pohotobucket but that's all that I can think of

I use Photobox for printing digital photos online and they also allow you to make your albums public and share them with friends. It seems to work OK although is perhaps not quite as straight forward as some of the previous alternatives.

Exactly why I don't use any of these image storage places. All mine are on the free space BT gave me with my broadband connection.

Of course, if I leave BTinternet...... :?

I have most of my pictures on the free space from BT, some fear as Tony on that. I have been using the free web space that Google give you with their account, I figure if Google goes it will be the end of the net as we know it.
I have/had  a few pictures on freeshare, it was very quick for adhoc ones.
I have started hosting sets of pictures on Flickr

Just come back after a while off here to find freeserve photo share gone.
I am going to give snapfish a go, it has an offer of 30 free prints on sighn up.

ferr prints if you give them your credit card details that is! I will pass on that, but just trying out the image thing I don't think you can do owt with them other than email them? will try photobucket.

Seems to work OK. However, by trial and error I've worked out that you must reduce the pic to a max of 800 x 600 pixels before uploading to Picasa as other wise the image doesn't appear in the thread. Instead you get this -

In case you are wondering, the image is of SWMBO and I crossing the McKinnon Pass on the Milford Track in S.Island, NZ.

Neil - it was a white out! S'funny tho'. It was fine when I posted it and when I came back to it all I got was the red x as well. So edited and reinserted the picture properties as per usual and back thge picture came again. Any idea what the problem may be? I'll monitor it and see whether it disappears again.

edit! aaaggh! It does! So Picasa is c%*$ as well! I'll try something else!

So how about Photobucket?

As I post this, the Picasa image has reappeared - bizarre!

edit. Picasa image still there, but if it's not reliable it's worse than nothing. Photobucket images still there tho' for self and Mrs S.

Just had an email to say that Yahoo! Photos is closing as well - but in this case because they are transferring everything to Flickr.

I think the writing is on the wall for many free photo hosting sites - especially those that offer more than just a space to put your pix. There is only a limited number of ways they can make money and most of these are overexploited (ads, print services and the like). I'm guessing the ones that will survive long-term are those that have size on their side and ancillary services hooked in (like Google Picasa). Otherwise I think the paid services will be the ones that win out in the end - as long as they offer a decent service. Smug Mug for example (although it has a limited free service) offers the paying customer unlimited storage and beyond this a real value-added proposition for say small companies or Pro photographers who can integrate their entire website with it.
