An interesting point, Jim.

Many years ago, when Alec Tirant were the ultimate source for carving gear and tools, they had a shop in Theale, near Reading where I lived at the time.

They were old-style specialist suppliers.
You could buy all sorts of stuff there, including un-handled carving tools..... just line 'em up on the counter and choose whichever one you wanted......

Also they would make a name punch to order, as was traditional for old-school journeymen, which I still have, that produces a name impression very much like yours.

It is very hard steel and will easily stamp wood as well as mild steel.
my stamp came from the same sort of shop can't remember the name at the moment, it was just up the road from Kings Cross in London
they had a man in a van who toured round all the workshops. If we did not have our tools stamped we was not covered by the firms insurance

I inlay a circle above a square in a contrasting wood somewhere on the piece. I did an Ironman years ago and it kind of started after that. It’s the logo for my website and insta page @woodmarked_uk

My maternal grandfather was a joiner at the local colliery. He passed away when I was only 5, but I remember as a teen rummaging through his collection of old tools and finding a piece of metal looking like a small bolster chisel with WEllard in reverse letters on its base …..this was his makers stamp - I’d love to of been still in possession of it now.

Hi. I’ve got a laser pecker. They work well. Got mine from ebay for a couple hundred quid. The app is free and is easy to use. I use it to burn my maker mark into my turning projects. But it has loads of other possibilities.

I started out with burn stamp with my logo but after a few tries I considered that too high risk, you only get one shot at it and often when the project is done so mistakes are hard to repair. Nowadays I use custom coins with my logo, ordered from Aliexpress a few years ago, didn't cost that much, think around 1€ per piece at 100pcs order. These I install in a 2mm deep 20mm diameter hole, put epoxy in the bottom so it doesn't fall out. I very much prefer this solution over the burn stamp.

(Zoom the picture, they are actually very well made)
