Ok you lot, with far more experience than me, presented with 3 choices - thin/medium/thick.......which do you go for and do you use the activator ?

Chris.

Hi Scrums, I go for medium, no activator, run some inside the blank, push a bit of potato on one end of the tube, other end on a tube inserter, run three lines down the tube, twist as you go, use a small nail to keep the tube a little way in job done!!!

Medium or normal off the shelf CA - no activator, I just stop the lathe and find something else to do for a couple of minutes!

I put it on thin so doesn't take long to dry - medium can go on a bit too thick for my liking.

I use Titebond for the tubes!

Hi Chris.

I use Slip Fit find it a lot easier as I had a couple go off on me before I had them together properly. Takes a bit longer to go off, but I do 5 pens together so by the time you've finished glueing, the first is dry and your ready to trim the ends.

chris, i use thick ca for all my tubes spud the tubes like thomasb said. then push half way in with a twisting motion, pull it out and finish off from the other side. then a quick spray of activator. by the time you have done both you can sqare thends up. job done and i have never had one come loose. i use med ca for my finish, thin for lubricant whilst sanding pourus wood to fill tiny holes.

I always use Gorilla glue as I have found that CA is sometimes too brittle and can shear away from the tube or wood. They say that you should leave Gorilla glue for 24 hours to cure but I have found that after about an hour it is perfectly strong enough for turning.
