Hi, after some tuition in the UK I have just got my own lathe up and running (Nova 1624). I have made one small item with a Patriot chuck but now find that the Patriot chuck is not running true, I tried re seating the insert but makes no difference. When I fit the Supa Nova chuck which came with the lathe that is spot on. Am I missing something, have I done something wrong ? any suggestions before I ring sorby would be appreciated.

Thanks

Paul.

Paul, I assume the patriot has a thread adaptor fitted.

If so is it registering on the lathe spindle correctly? I may be that the lathe spindle is fouling on the back of the chuck internals before the adaptor is properly seated.

This chart may help you check the dimensions.

If you can eliminate a dimension problem or that fitting a packing washer will not help then a call to Sorby is in order.

Hi thanks for the reply, the chuck insert appears to register properly on the spindle but the side of the insert where the grub screw secures it seems to have moved and been scratched by the screw. The chuck seemed to be true when I first used it but clearly something has changed. Thanks for your advice.

Hiya Paul, I have the same lathe as you I also had 3 chucks 2 Supernovas and a Patriot. the one that came with the lathe is a dedicated supernova. I also managed to get another one the same,i had no problems with either.the prob. was with the Patriot it will not fit properly Chas, is right about it not getting to the back against the bearing.
a frind who works in an engeneering shop made me two 5mm thick washers that fit over the shaftand the patriot worked ok. I only use one washer at a time, ihave now got into the habit of leaving it on all the time.i have sold on the patriot to my mate and he said he could get certs. to prove that two of sorbys inserts are not running true.and you can not get a dedicated M33x3.5 chuck to buy for love or money not supernova2 either.this is just my opinen but i think that they make them in 1"x8tpi only why idont know maybe just to make you buy the inserts. they say they are made in UK with colours flying british engineers are far above that I stand by anything i have printed here i went through months of hell with other lathes and the patriot REgards Eugene.

Did you contact Sorby about your problems with the chuck, I intend to ring them on Monday morning to see what they say ?

Thanks for reply

The run out on the rearmost part of the supernova chuck closest to the headstock is 1.5 thou, is this normal ? sorry if these are silly questions but I am trying to make sure I can speak with some knowledge to Sorby about the patriot.

Thanks

Hi Eugene
So you wouldn`t recommend the Patriot then?. I was short listing that for my new lathe. It seems my local dealer is now ok with stocking the Supenova 2 33x3.5 direct threaded too so maybe supply problems with these are over now?
Regards
steve

Hi Paul, Hi Steve, Hi all,

I didn't know about the problems with the patriot chuck, but I recently bought a couple of chucks from Craft Supplies which had M33 x 3.5 direct threads. I can't say about the Nova but they fit my Vicmarc perfectly and were a good price too.

Paul, was it you that came to me for lessons?

Bob

Yes, Hi Bob,

thought it was my problem until I took a close look at the chuck, the patriot is nowhere near, going to ring sorby and have a chat about it tomorrow. The super nova is fine. will post how I get on with the manufacturer.

Hiya Steve , No i would not advise you to get one the Supernova2 with the dedicated M33x3.5 no problem at all as a mater of fact I got an Axminster from Cutting Crew with an M33x3.5 Plate which is a great little chuckhavent had a problem with it.
I think you said you are getting the vickmarc if so there chucks are brill, but a little expensive. Bob has mentioned two other chucks he has got and that should be reccomadition enough. I think its shows in the way patriot have put a ring of rubber around thir chucks which will not last too long that the Gimmick element comes into play. I gave mine away I couldent take money for it.Someone else said in our club he had a 3/4"x16tpi which is great. Because no insert is needed I think
I wish that they would make things either Metric or Imperial and not have both.I realise that there is a lot of lathes still in use with Imperial measurements but if you buy a new lathe you should get the dedicated chuck with it. REgards Boysie

A friend of mine who knows a lot more about engineering than I do identified the problem as the insert not bottoming out in the chuck body, you could see where the grub screw tightened it only left a semi circle on the edge of the insert no matter how tight you were to screw it in. The very bottom of the insert i.e. where the threads have been machined off was very slightly too large a diameter to allow the face to bottom properly. My friend removed a very small amount of material which virtually was no more than a good polish using a fine needle file with the insert mounted on the lathe spindle. Now when the grub screw is tightened up it leaves a full circle on the insert, I guess it has gone in another 2 to 3mm and bottomed on the chuck register. Run out is now of no consequence on the dial gauge. I have liaised with Paul at Sorby who is going to look at his tolerances. I am happy with the chuck now. Thanks to all for your help.

I thought that was a very interesting thread. I also think it is a pity that a company like Sorby, that has I think, a pretty good reputation.
Needing customers like us to sort out the flaws in their products.
You would think their engineers would have spotted their chucks were not seating or correctly registering on various lathes, :-k maybe they didn't try out too many. [-X [-X [-X [-X
(And their products are not cheap).

Paul, I'm glad you got it sorted outat last ,it really upset me a lot more frustration than anything else.I had only began woodturning at the time and had only moved to the area where i am living now.which is fairley remote and knew nobody to ask.any help i got was from this fourm. i was'nt in a club no others to turn to ,to be honest i would not have known how to get across what was happening if i had contacted Sorby. the bloke in the store where i bought it which is 73mls away from me said he had no other complaints from others.if the truth be known that was almost 2 yrs ago and it may have been the first he had sold for all i know.
anyway i'm glad you have sorted your self out but it still leaves a taste in my mouth ,i would not like to stop anyone buying a good product but as has been said here Quality controll at Sorbys should get their act togeather. it's enough to be critical of eastern inports without having to knock your own. I have had a Patriot chuck for about 12 months now on my Appolo Woodpecker Superdrive which has a 25 x 2mm threaded insert, the only problem I had fitting the insert was the short grub screws which dropped into the back of the chuck when trying to locate them, I mentioned this to Sorby at one of the shows and they gave me some longer ones.

Apart from the red rubber band snapping which has been replaced I am very satisfied with it and would reccommend it to anyone, glad you you have sorted the problem Paul.

Thanks Eugene, like you I am remote, and have no one to ask locally. This is a super forum and from reading it members are great to beginners which makes those of us without experience be not afraid to ask. Sorby's were very good about the chuck and took on board what I was able to tell them about the insert, the chuck is now fine and it would seem the fault lies with the tolerances of the insert. Something I cannot blame now !!

I know how you feel Paul, Jeez dont tell me the Super is acting up look at the lean on that lamp! maybe it wasent dry enough.
