Paste wax

Good morning friends.

I want to make a table sled for my table saw (that has not been used for more than 3 secs so far...newly bought...I finish school for Xmas next week and will get it used). I have watched approximately 38 thousand U-tube videos on how to make one, so I am pretty confident in what I need to do. BUT...every video...all 38 thousand of them say to use 'paste wax' on the runners and bottom of the sled to make it slide.

I have now searched (Google...usually my friend, but not this time) to no avail. I can't seem to find what these U-tubers call paste wax. Do we call it something else in the U.K?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Any wax is fine but don't use too much or the tool rest and tailstock will slide even when tightened down, go on, ask how I know 🥴🤪😉
Generally I find keeping the bedways clean and free of rust works just as well, a light coat of WD40 every now and then helps stop the rust and keep things moving freely.

Its for the table saw, not a lathe.

You've gone lathe mental

Paste wax is yank-speak - I believe they polish their lumber with it.

Furniture wax is a better search term here - Briwax, Liberon, Fiddes etc.

So a candle?
yes a candle would do but a furniture was will give you better coverage more easily. It's just a wax in a carrier/solvent so it has the consistency of a paste rather than a hard stick, once applied the solvent evaporates and leaves the wax behind which can then be polished to a shine and will set hard.

Yes that'll do it. Just needs to be rubbed on with a rag.

You'll just need to reapply every now and then - the stiction comes back as it wears off but if you are anything like me (on planer thicknesser tables mostly) it'll creep up and catch you every time so you kick yourself for not thinking to redo it sooner than you did. But that's because it will take a long time - many months unless you use it lot.

Thanks Jake. Just ordered some for collection tomorrow.

It’s just for lubrication so most waxes are fine

Axminster used to sell machine wax - handy to wipe over metal surfaces for lubrication and rust protection

Paste wax was used on floors back in the day when people waxed their floors to protect and keep them shiny. The gold standard of the day here was Johnsons Paste wax and they stopped making it a number of years ago. I use Miniwax Paste Finishing Wax now, maybe sold in the UK, but as the others said Paraffin (canning wax or candles) works as a lubricant on the saw table, slots, fixture runners etc. Just don't use spray furniture polish as some has silicone in it and it plays havoc with finishes (fish eyes etc).

I don't know if they still sell it but I have some machine lubricating wax by Liberon, This is rather more liquid than these other furniture waxes, and is very easy to apply and rub off. It works a treat on saw and planer beds.

Once again, we've fallen into the trap of not reading the OP's question - he specifically mentions that the need for wax he's seen in gazillions of YouTube clips concerning table saw sleds relates to lubricating the runners on the sled, NOT the saw table, mortice slots etc ...

Here's the answer to the question: Axminster's WOOD PASTE WAX:

PS: Also ideal for use on wooden drawer runners/slides ...
