I've been let down a couple of times by an electrician who was going to sign off my workshops wiring for Part P, so I thought i'd get someone in as I need to get it insulated and boarded about before winter bites.

So, can anyone give me a rough idea of how much it costs for a sparky to check over an existing installation and sign it of for Part P - I just wanted to get some ballpark figures before contacting locals for quotes.

Cheers.

As far as I know, your local council should be able to sign it off (for a fee, naturally). A spark is only needed if you want them to do the work and sign it off at the same time.

In the strictest sense of Part P, I don't believe any sparky can "sign" off an existing installation. However the practicality of it is that this is what building control officers want to happen in practice.

If I was a sparky, signing my name to legally indemnify an installation I had neither designed, installed nor overseen the work I think I would probably charge more than the cost of doing the installation itself.

I think each sparky might view it very differently, do you know anyone who is a friend of a friend, or a customer or a family friend who is a qualified sparky? They might be more inclined to sign it off for a nominal fee?
