Own brand tools - not such a bargain after all

I have one of the cheap Axminster own brand shoulder planes, they describe it as a No 19(92) Shoulder Plane so while it might be the same size as the original Stanley 92 I’m not sure if it would be identical for parts.

I’ve had the plane for a while but only used it a couple of times, on the third time I went to use it the blade holder snapped in two as I tightened it. I’ve mailed Axminster asking about spares but I don’t expect any parts exist for own brand stuff.

My own fault for buying cheap own brand stuff, what seemed like a bargain at the time is probably going to have to be junked unless I can make something to fit.

Edited three days after original post. Axminster do carry spares for their own brand gear and supplied the part very quickly. This is a nice little plane for not much money, with spare parts available if required I'd say it is a bargain.

I nearly bought one of those but it was too cheap on offer. I figured for £15 there could be absolutely no budget for quality

I bought one and spent a couple of hours cleaning it up, smoothing all the mating surfaces and fully prepping the blade. It is now a very passable shoulder plane and certainly worth the £15 or so. I actually learnt a lot prepping the plane as I was happy to take a file to it in a way I would not have to a more expensive one.

Very true and when we expect that and are prepared to the work then all is good. If purchased by a novice, much disapointment will result.

Received the new part this morning. Many thanks Richard, excellent customer service from Axminster. With spares available and good customer service the Axminster own brand is actually a bargain after all. I was very pleased with the standard of machining and accuracy on the rest of the plane. This is a nice little plane for such a low cost.
