A guest recently pointed out this optical illusion.... We had not seen it before and initially struggled to see it until a sketch was made. Can you see it?

I totally understand - I thought the person who described it was going a bit doolally-tap.

I can now see it easily, but I will leave the explanation a bit so that others can play.

I *will* explain it when folks get bored with looking, but I am not sure how long to leave it.

Maybe this evening?

I have just drawn the solution on a copy of the image. I will try to pm it to you.

<edit>Sorry cannot attach images to pms? </edit>

Just pm'ed you a url that may give you the image - not sure if I have done it right. Give it a try

ugh ... without having seen this from another view point, or indeed knowledge of geometry, not sure how we're supposed to see the illusion?

I'm guessing it makes more sense to you because you know the geometry involved?

I know, it is difficult. I am trying to let people have fun testing whether they can see anything odd. I would not have done had it not been pointed out. We have looked at this view from our window for three years without seeing it. Bob saw it straight away, and then spent a while trying to convince us. Now that we can see it we are surprised that we never saw it before. It works in real life (i.e. not in the photo), in fact Bob took the photo to show us after he had seen it.....

I do not want to spoil if for others, but I will pm a link to an 'enhanced' image that may make it obvious to any that ask. I am not sure if my 'enhancement' will give it away. I will post the link later in this thread.

Well Dr. Phil, I was going to say that it looks like one of my attempts to stitch a couple of photos together using Photoshop (the slight blur down the middle of the picture you posted looks just like that). BUT if you say it can be seen in real life then it's obviously not a Photoshop Photomerge trick so I give up.

But OTOH there's definitely something "funny" going on here - e.g. the red/brown top of the wall coming towards the camera is thicker at the front of the picture than it is at the rear - MUCH thicker than a normal wall would be?

I still give up (what passes for my brain 'urts)

I am going to say that the extension is not at 90 degrees to the main house and recon it's closer to 45 degrees

I cant see a wall? Just a roof? I'm baffled.... Unless..... Is that a UFO centre pic?!?

Grrrrr .... still looking! I see a house on the right on a hill, small house on the left lower down the hill, the big house at the bottom with a garage (possibly), and the house in the background. I can't even see an illusion unless its that second house roof looks a bit like a wall apart from the chimney and aerial!

Got it, Don't look intently at the picture, just stare at the whole photo and the gable end of the house, the white bit suddenly appears to protrude outward. At least it does for me, am i right.

Alan.
