Am considering in getting a Fox F46 -717A Lathe. What do you think gents? is it a good buy at £455.00

I've got the 46 -719 John, and for just shy of £300 bucks, I think its great.


Its noisy.. but its reeves drive, so its going to be.


Its not the lathe I'll 'end up' with ultimately.. its a stepping stone, that falls into what I can afford / justify at present.. ultimately I think I'd like a Vicmarc or something like that... I was very very impressed with PaulJ's lathe at the bash in brum... its fantastic.

I can't really fault the fox John...It does everything I've asked of it ( its 'one down' from the one you're looking at, but very similar..),
for the money, I think they're pretty good value.

Well made, decent materials / components, and easy to put together and maintain... the only slight downside is the noise, by comparison to higher-end machines

I am looking at the one Jenx has gort and to be quite honest, the differenc in the two is minimal considering there is a big difference in price. A bit more horsepower, another 4" over the bed and the bottom speed on the expensive one is actually faster than on the cheaper one. I reckon that the cheaper one is the better buy of the two. Unless a bargain comes up on Ebay in the next week or two I think that that is the one I will go for. Compared to the Axminsters and Records the spec is far higher and Fox tools seem to have a good reputation overall.

Pete, there are two Graduate lathes for sale on this mnts. Woodturning Mag. one is variable speed priced at £695 tother has no price and 31 chisels with it . just in case your interested and had not seen REgards Boysie.

Thanks Boysie, way beyond my budget I'm afraid. I ned to be able to rurn larger than 9" and longer than 10" which is all I can do at the moment. Also I have to add the cost of transport which is usually a lot living where I do. There have been a few relly nice graduates with eletroninc speed control etc lately A beauty up in Weton but at the last minute they rocket usually.

That is the best price I've seen as well. On the net it is more expensive as there is postage. The Poolewood offer is free postage. Look at all the other lathes around the same spec and you add another £100 at least, even Axminster.

Hi John and all,
I bought a Fox F46-251 which is much smaller than the one you are looking at but all I would like to say is if it is any indication of build quality I am pleased with this little chap.
I bought it 18 months ago for its higher speed 3050 rpm, 2 MT and 1" x 8 thread as a compact fast lathe to turn pens, finials, small spindle work etc. and be compatable with my other lathes.
I have recently been giving it more work to do with longer operating times and I find that after 30 minutes you cannot bear your hand on the motor and at 60 minutes the thermal trip called game over.
All was well when it cooled down but i now have an auxiliary fan blowing into the motor fan cowl but as the turnings drop straight down they are then blown all over.
A check if the motor is continuously rated would be a good idea.
