Oops. Colouring was fun though...

Had a go at texting and colouring which was great fun...until turning the bowl when I noticed a lot of flexing near the final cuts. Not quite through the bottom but almost. I'll have to try to rescue it by plugging the bottom somehow. I also need a bigger light box. ..

Nice effect
You could rescue by turning a small bowl to insert and glue it in - expanding glue? although I find it messy to work with.
Perhaps leaving a little upstand as a feature and also so that you don't have to get the height and diameter both exact.

Just a thought.

Shame about the problem, but it's a very attractive effect you've created on the rim. I'm not normally keen on colouring etc. but this really hits the mark.

Thanks for the kind comments and suggestions. I can see how colouring and texturing can become addictive! I hope to launch my rescue of the bowl on Saturday and I'll post results. It may end up being a mirror frame....

Cheers Blister. That might be plan B!

As you first mentioned, if the base is too thin then fit (glue on) a false foot, ensuring any void in the base joint is filled with glue.

If you go for the base repair, in the first instance make it thick enough to allow you to remount the bowl so that you can carefully remove the tool marks from bowl portion, take care not to sand through :)

That's my plan A, Chas - I daren't take any more of the bottom of the bowl on the inside but a large glued on foot I hope will give me enough rigidity to tidy up the badly torn grain nearer the rim...fingers crossed!

Turned a plug and glued it to the bottom. Will see how I get on turning it tomorrow...

Success! The glued in foot held and I got a reasonable finish on the inside from the tool. Reverse chucked in some wood plate jaws in expansion mode and carefully turned the plug away. Don't think I can enter it in my club competition but I know someone mad about orange who should love it anyway...

Extremely well recovered, and those few hours attempting and solving that problem have taken your skill and confidence levels an order of magnitude up the learning curve.
You don't learn much from the easy tasks, it's the problem solving that develops the confidence and skills the quickest.

Thanks, Chas - it was indeed a great learning opportunity! There's a very nice high pitched note if you tap gently in the middle of the bowl...

Very nice bowl Stewart, well worth the recovery effort. I thoroughly recommend be wiser as a learning aid and design tool.
The randomised rim detail looks great too.

Thanks, Bob. I've done one other coloured textured bowl before but this was a definite improvement on that first one.
