I think the specific gravity of stone is around 2, so the volume of 1 tonne of chippings would be around 0.5 cu m. I'm usually not too good when it comes to maths so I could be wrong!
One cubic metre of water weighs one tonne (I think)
Un-compacted aggregate chippings are ~ 1400 - 1500 kg per cubic metre, when compacted this will increase ~2000kg per cubic metre.
So, your 1000kg should be somewhere between 0.7 and 0.5 cubic metres. Of course it all depends the material and its packing geometry, and how/if it's compacted. There are a few suppliers online that have simple calculators.
Are Mole Valley farmers at Newton Abbot fairly close to you?
They do sleepers amongst loads of other stuff.
Some of their prices are very good, my Architect friend gets quite a bit from them, so they must be competitive!
