Just seen this when browsing the 'bay.

It is safe to say I know slightly less than nothing about old tools. I do know that Sorby is/was a respected name, but is this a good or rare example?

If it is any good then it looks like a good project for someone with the time, skills and inclination :D

Possible 'antique' Sorby Plane

Cheers

Mark

PS Disclaimer : This listing is nothing to do with, my ebay name is the same as my name on here, with a couple of _ in there.

Did Sorby make planes like that? Or is it just a Sorby iron in a patternmaker's special?

There is another plane on the bay at the moment which is identified as being by Hearnshaw because the iron is. Sounds unlikley.

NEVER COULD UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE INSIST ON WRITING THEIR EBAY ADVERTS IN HUGE CAPITAL LETTERS WITH NO PUNCTUATION, EXCEPT FOR THE OCCASIONAL, RANDOMLY, INSERTED COMMA, BANGING ON AND ON ABOUT HOW WONDERFUL THE ITEM, IS, AND DESCRIBING IT IN MINUTE DETAIL WITH EVERY CONCEIVABLE MEASUREMENT (OFTEN IN BOTH IMPERIAL AND METRIC) JUST SO THAT IT'S EVEN MORE DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND JUST WHAT IT IS ABOUT THE HIDEOUS PIECE OF TAT PICKED UP FOR A COUPLE OF QUID AT SUNDAYS BOOT FAIR, THAT THE SELLER, ACTUALLY WANTS US TO KNOW EXCEPT PERHAPS THAT HE CAN'T SPELL BELIEVE OR DEFINITELY AND CAN'T BE BOTHERED TO SPELLCHECK THE ENTRY BEFORE SUBMITTING THE ADVERT FOR SOMETHING HE CLEARLY KNOWS NEXT TO NOTHING ABOUT, THE REAL SURPRISE HERE IS THAT IT HAS BIDS ON IT AT ALL AND I SUPPOSE THAT'S THE THING ABOUT EBAY IS THAT YOU CAN SELL ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING IF YOU'RE IN THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME AND SHOUT LOUD ENOUGH.

LOL
Gave me a giggle, thanks!
Trim, I think this one is more than I'd want to take on - I kind of have my hands full at the moment, anyway.
Cheers

Looks like a small infill (block, chariot?) with a BODGE replacement (strap and wedge) for a missing lever cap, and a Sorby blade.

Sorby DID make some Bailey type planes during their "Northern Tools" incarnation, and some normal wooden bench planes, but I've never seen or heard of anything more exotic.

As you say, their blades move in the highest circles, including Norris.
