Great job - I'm always amazed at how the wood comes to life when finish is added, as raw that wood didn't look like very much...

What is that black magic cleaner you used? Is there an equivalent over here anyone know? (or is it just autosol..)

Lovely shaping on the handle

Its a bottle of cold gunmetal blueing agent. I use it to darken the newly cut edges of the saw plate assembly.

Wow Stewie great job ,whats left from the original saw just the folded spline ?

Cheers Bern

Folded spine and saw plate are original. Original handle was cactus.

So that must have been a bit tricky ,how did you remove the saw plate from the spline without any damage? Cant see the original handle holes in the plate ,did you cut it down in the length ?

Cheers Bern :D

Hi Bern. Removing the spine is not a difficult job. Masking tape over the saw plate. Clamp the plate vertical in a good machinist vise and ease the spine of with a wide blade screwdriver and hammer. The saw plate was shortened 1 1/2" to remove the old securing holes. The modern saw bolts use a smaller dia. hole. The depth of the plate was then shortened by 1" to achieve a better visual balance between L & D. If you revisit the 1st 2 photo's posted you can see the before and after.

Hi Mark. Use a pointed scriber to mark the area on the saw plate that needs to be cut. Then cut just outside the scribed line using the hand sheet metal shears. If you have a 12 inch bench mounted sander (medium grit ), use it to bring the saw plate edge to the scribed line. If your cutting along the edge that will later have teeth, always joint this edge 1st with a flat file to insure its perfectly straight. Apply Dykem sheet metal marker, or similar prior to the edge being jointed (straight edge) with a flat file. Its an ideal visual guide to help you file the edge straight.
