Paraffin is the normal fuel but if you're going to use it indoors, better to buy odourless lamp oil.

Whatever happened to the Esso blee doolers? Not seen a garage paraffin pump for decades.

I've got my Grans victorian oil lamp which I've used. I use paraffin, these days it comes in 5l packs from B&Q.

It looks more like a storm lantern than a domestic use one where you are trying to maximise the light output.
Has it got a wick?

That is what they would like you to think, but as with most things in retail ripoff packaging, the contents are not what you think you're seeing.
The actual contents in this case is 4l.

Yes it has a wick.
If I remember correctly, this wasn't used as you see it here, I think you lit it and then placed it in a light or signal.

as above, it's a signal lamp, it would have been black originally and had a set of filters that could be slid in and out (I think) to show red and green.
it was called a welch patent lamp because they made them.

yes it will run on paraffin or kerosene, be ready to clean the glass often.

I have had it running on paraffin, works well! I actaully quite like the smell, reminds of camping and steam engines :)

it looks like it would run for a very long time on one tank, I had it going for best part of 6 hours and it didn’t make a dent.

I have seen these with the paint still on, the name plate had a black background too. I bought this one because its wasn’t £60 like they usaully seem to be and all the working parts were there. I think I’ll leave it as it is and I quite like the colour of the metal, unless rusting becomes a issue.
