I never in a million years thought that one day I would actually be commissioned to make pieces to match a customers collection of 1970s G Plan furniture.

Apparently its becomming quite collectable!!

Just got to finish making the screw on recessed plynth.

Personally I bloomin hate it but each to their own!!

Soundly built and functional design, it'll still be doing good service long after much of the large shed junk has gone to the recycling centre.
We still have a piece of wartime utility doing good service which I guess is the fore runner in design concept to G plan.

I don't quite understand why G-Plan is becoming "quite collectible." To me this implies that it is no longer readily available.
G-plan is still produced today - in the UK!!! I'm pretty sure that they will still make to their old designs as well as the range of modern furniture they produce. At least they did just a few years ago when I wanted an occasional table to match other items we had. I also recently bought a G-plan lounge suit.

Someone once said the rarest 20th century furniture to collect would be unopened MFI creations, as none of it will survive, (hooray).

This side unit is being made to customers specific sizes, something which isn't available off the shelf

I agree with you Dodge

Not something i would ever have but The customer is always right and always has the very best of taste

It's all work and pays the bills Rog. :D Yes it's a simple design but still nice looking. Type of furniture that would fit in anywhere really. Nice job.

Yes, I appreciate that what you have so exellently made is a bespoke item in the G-Plan style and had to be so because it is not a piece that G-Plan actually make.
I was just saying that I find it odd that standard G-Plan products are considered "collectibles" whilst they are still available from the manufacturer.

They weren't very collectible a few months ago when I had to dispose of some of my late mothers furniture!

Given away to charity in the end.

I am reluctant to say this, because everything else of yours I have seen has involved much more trickery and skill, but this is (in my obviously subjective view) by far the nicest piece I have seen you produce! It's lovely and understated and far nicer than anything E Gomme would actually have produced.

Of course, if it were to become a popular style again then someone would start creating them en masse, and at a price which you could not afford to match, so let's hope it doesn't become too popular.

I found prices for a particular (and distinctive) G-plan table design on the net ranging from 10-15 quid at auction or eBay up to 150 quid (same table) from antique dealers with website, or eBay.

Make of that what you will.

Would tend to agree there. A very nice piece, plain and simple, uncomplicated. Excellent.

Ok lacquered and polished and guess what :-

I bloomin hate it!

Customers saw it this afternoon and are over the moon with it so thats all that counts

The Danish style G-Plan stuff is very popular with people at the moment, because it fits in perfectly with 'modern' homes and lifestyles. And it's considerably better made than most mass produced tat you get now. People have grown up from IKEA, and are seeking something a bit nicer, a bit classier. G-Plan fits the bill perfectly. It's stylish without being pretentious. It's classy without being vulgar. It's 'antique' without being 'old'.
