I know I keep putting too many pics up, but I don't put up everything I make, only things I feel proud of or things I want your opinions on . Having only started turning in October this still happens a lot  .

Anyway I made this this morning in just over an hour(a record for me by a long way), although it was already turned into a blank(its the other half of the top of the little table from last week). The speed comes from finally getting to grips with shear scraping and my box of abranet, which I'm finding sands quickly and gives a really good finish :) .
Its sycamore, sanded from 120-400 with abranet then with 600 grit wet and dry moistened with a bit of white spirit. Finished with hard wax.10"wide x 2" tall.

Comments/criticisms appreciated

Once again JT... I'm liking that !!
The profile shows a very attractive curve to my eyes ....

Small question - middle picture ... is the 'thickness' slighly eccentric ?
or is that just an optical illusion on the pic ?

Love the burn line.. its positioned 'spot-on' ... do you measure "where" to put it ? -- I've been doing that recently, just to try and get into a 'design thought' process if I can ...

Good turnaround at an hour.. I cant do that. :D I'm very slow, I think.

The bowl's a beaut ! another winner from the sycamore stash !
She's a good 'un !!

Its just the pic  , I'm not the greatest photographer  . It was taken right below a window(as it has a convenient radiator to hang me dark background cloth on) and thats just how the reflection has caught it.

No You Don't johnny, good bad or indifferent the progress through the learning curve is always good for reference by others in a similar position.
When I started there were very few turners of any ability participating on the forum but their encouragement, and that of non turner members to post results, spurred me on to try something different and helped no end in confidence stakes.

Hi JT,

Not much to critcise there. :D
Thats a damn good hours work. It takes me a lot longer to get there.

Just getting weaned off the 80grit gouge :!:

I echo Jenx's comments about the burn line

Nice shape, lovely flowing curve, and again, enough detail to highlight without overpowering. :D

And I can only echo Chas's comments - there is no such thing as too many pictures;when I joined the forum,Chas was almost keeping the woodturning section going single-handedly.
It's grown from there to be the best (and biggest) woodturning forum in the UK,and it has only done that due to the membership both growing and participating.
We all learn from each other, and share the same passion for a common interest, generally without a bad word said - what more could you want? :D

A very pleasing shape, simple and elegant.
How did you do the burnt line and what with? If I may venture a suggestion, if you can reverse chuck it, turn out the base inset by turning a small bowl with a rim to use as a foot.
It tends to make people who turn it over when looking at it to ask" how was it turned"? "How did he hold it on the lathe"?

One hour! it takes me that to get down to the shed which is only 50m
super bit of turning if I could do that the struggle would be worth it
Keep em coming. REgards Boysie

lovely JT, really impressed with it, nice shape, colour and size. Keep posting them, i am still learning from it.. :)

John B:

To burn a line like this get hold of a piece of wire, guitar string piano wire something like that and put a handdle at each end. Make a grooove in your work then hold the wire in the groove firmly until it starts to smoke. Simple. Don't try to do it wiithout having handles mind as if it catches (doesn't usually but Murphy can be a pig) it could be dangerous.

You can buy them but they are so easy to make up it seems pointless.

Great work. To say you have only been turning since October is nothing short of amazing.

The picture on the left shows a beautiful form. Which is unbroken and a continuous curve.

The burn line is just right adding interest to the form without taking the eye directly to it. I can view the whole piece without being distracted which is how I like work.

The finish is superb.

This is great work and I wish I had been turning like this after only five months. Of have you forgotten to tell us that you started October 2000.

well done and don't apologise for posting lots of work. It is great to look at
people work especially when it is as good as this.

Take care
Mark

Keep the piccys coming JT,they are very nice pieces to see :D
I think it's great to get some feedback about what we do as there is no one else to give it,apart from TOH :D

Thanks everyone :D ,

Jenx, I didn't measure for the line, the only thing I ever measure on anything is the width for the chuck recess or spigot, I just have an idea for a shape and make it and put any detail where it seems it 'should' go.

John.B, I cut a small groove with a skew and used a guitar sting between bits of dowel to burn the line. I have a doughnut chuck for finishing the bottom of bowls but didn't use it wanted to keep the base as small as possible on this one.

Blister, thats not a knot! its a bit of spalting :D

Mark, ,it was definitely October 2008

Well if you don't mind the barrage of posts and pics I'll keep putting them on,just let me know when you've had enough

cheers JT

Keep 'em coming Johnny ... and everyone else. 8)

Its brilliant to see everyone's work.
Helps with 'ideas' and
next to an actual 'course' its the best education going !
You get the thoughts, comments and input from what, say 20+ regular posters, - with new fellas arriving regularly too... Couldn't put a price on what thats worth !

Keep it coming.. definately !! :) :D :) :D

Pete,
I am aware how to burn a line which is quite easy when spindle turning.
But not quite so easy when bowl turning which is why I asked how you did it to your bowl?
