According to the instructions, the O'Donnell Sharpening jig comes in two flavours, 6" & 8" denoted by a label on the front. Mine didn't have a label when I bought it so I don't know which version I have. I'd like to know so that I can set it up properly.

Can anyone who has one with the label still intact please compare the dimensions on the attached photos with their version so that I can work out whether I have the 6" or 8" version.

Many thanks.

Here is a manual and a page to set it up with each dif size wheel. 6,7 and 8.
I suppose a riser block under unit to get it to centre of wheel will allow you to use on any size wheel. Then when you have set up. Cut some small pieces of wood at each angle and see if they match your jig angles. If not can make note of how far out.

Thanks Lefley

I do have the manual and I did what you suggest with an 8" wheel on an older grinder but some angles were slightly out.

I'm setting it up again with a new grinder and a CBN wheel so I thought I'd see if I could work out which model I have. If it is the 6" model, that would explain the error. If not, it's probably my setting up!

I bet it is the 6 inch model if you are having angle issues. Looks like you need a chart above grinder to tell you the actual setting you need to achieve the common angles after you do your trial and error adjustments. But as you probably know, the angle diff between say 45 and 43 is not that much in Woodturning. It's the repeatability of whatever angle you have now that is the most important Every time you regrind to sharpen.

I think you're probably right about the model. I've got it set at a different height from the manual suggestion (107 instead of 140mm). That works OK for higher angles like 45 degs but 15 degrees is actually more like 20 but that's OK because I know and, in any event, it's the result that matters more than the figure. It would still be nice to know which model it is though.

I can't quite read your label on the first picture, but I'm happy to measure my jig for you to compare. I'll post some photos later

Thank you.

I added larger dimensions to the picture but, for reasons I don't understand, the same picture on this forum shows it without the larger text! I've re-edited the photo and it's attached but here is the info in case it isn't visible:

Length of Tool Rest arm from base to start of tool rest, 110mm.
Length of bottom arm from base to centre of hole for upper arm, 82mm.
Angle of bottom bracket for lower arm, 30 degrees.

Many thanks, B

Looks like it could be the 8” version.
These measurements are off the 6” version…

Thank you. That's helpful.

Yes, that does seem to be the case. I'll have another look tomorrow. Assuming it is the 8", it's odd that the setup procedure in the manual didn't work. Maybe it's user error!
