Found more often on YT and in woodworking books than real life situations.

You are right, with the vast improvements in adhesives and new machine jointing some of the old joints are just for personal fulfilment or hand tool practice. On the old C&G courses we used to cut secret mitred dovetails, never used one in the commercial world!

I have used that joint a few times. Not out of need but "just for fun". I have not had one fail to go together and not had one fail in use - but I am sure normal joints would have done the same job just as well.
 
The joint between the verticals and feet of my Klausz bench are fox wedged. Just for the hell of it. The top joint is just through wedged. 2009.
