Hi there, I want to show you a project I recently finished - an octogonal (8 sided) gazebo, and it's construction. More pictures and details soon. (mixed up the name in the title)
The posts are 150mm round section, the beams are 120x120mm, rafters, braces, railing - 50x150mm, the railing infill is 50x75.
To add some rigidity I joined the beams with a rigid joint:
Here goes the construction:
First I made the beams, so when they are ready and assembled - I can mark the locations of the posts and avoid mistakes.
The edges of most pieces were routed to look better. Everything is stained dark (it is also an antiseptic)
Then I cut the posts to length and planed them (they were really dusty and rough)
The bottoms of the posts stand on a rubber disk and on pieces of D12 rebar (drilled into the stone base)
The top of the post is connected to the beam assembly by a custom made barrel-nut
Here are the posts and beams assembled. It starts to take shape. (I'm trying on a rafter, with the help of my dad)
Next I made the rafters (by the way every piece is hand-cut by a handsaw) and the top piece that holds them together.
The top of the rafters is connected to the top piece by a dowel, and later screwed there tight. The birdsmouth was tricky - corners.
(on the background - my dad's hobby, an old UAZ that he is repairing)
Covered the boards with bitumen tarp, fixed the edges with sheet metal edging, and layed the shingles
A sheet metal 8-sided pyramid finishes the roof
This is actually my first woodworking project (hmm.. actually I fixed a stool before once).
I recieved a lot of help and advice from my dad, and he bought all the materials - I would like to thank him for that.
I will be happy to hear your questions or comments, thank's for your attention.
Thanks for the answers. Yeah, it's my first project with wood done by me, but I have an engineering background so I used to design all kinds of structures for living, and I saw how others did stuff with wood.. and I have youtube Thing is, that I recently got interested in woodworking and timberframing particularly. I started to research the internet and than came the moment when I thought that I have to try to actually build something. coincidentally there was a vacant place for a gazebo in my fathers garden - that's what came out. I am considering now to start a career in carpentry, hope 25 isn't too late to learn Got sick of the office routine..
Very impressive! If that's a first time woodworking job, that's amazing.
Thanks for an excellent WIP, Tell you're parent he has a clever son!
