I recently saw a small wind turbine (the blades and supporting post at least) made from a recycled pallet. It got me to thinking if any body would be interested to have a go at building something just using the wood from a pallet as the material's? not neceaserily mechanical, it could be furniture whatever. Is there any mileage in something like that. Not a competition per se but to compare idea's and see how different folk make use of the same thing??
what do you think?
cheers Jonathan :D

Many years ago I 'obtained' a largish quantity of various veneers from a firm called Intasco in Dorset, long since closed. When I was there the bloke told me that veneers were delivered to them on pallets made from the same timber as the veneer....rosewood, teak, maple etc, etc  ..'nuff said that there were no gash pallets lying around the yard, wonder where they all went? - Rob

I saw some timber being sold other day (can't recall where) which was the remains of logs which had been cut for veneer. These were planks varying from 1"-3", beyond that I guess it gets too floppy to slice and too hard to grip the stock. So I guess it would make sense to use the waste - can't exactly sell boiled stuff off as prime timber!

I once saw a bathroom made out of pallets, it looked like a bathroom made out of old pallets!!!!

I was once given a pile of pallets and thought "Great, free wood...!" But when it came to actually breaking them up and using the wood, I gave up. They use gazillions of nails to hold these things together and the pieces you get are all different sizes and thicknesses. It was just too much trouble for me so I gave them to some other poor sucker to try.

Brian

My parents own a bed shop in Sheffield, and I get first salvage rights on their storage room before the scrap man arrives :)

Most recently a set of slats from an old bed turned into a couple of bird tables, with a little help from the jointer and thicknesser

My god man have you not seen the price of bedslats? :D I was horrified when I built a bed at the cost of slats. They cost more than the timber for the bed. Luckily I found some loitering in a relatives attic.
Cheers Mike

The good slats cost a fortune, some pretty good wood in them :)

Lucky for me people pay my folks to take the old beds away and I acquire the slats at no cost.

I keep bringing pallets home from work, determinded to use them, but after falling over them a few times i chop em up and burn on the chimnea.

Matt.

Pallets often have some very nice wood in them however one has to be very careful of nails & give them a real good cleaning before running them through power equipment. Dirt is kinda hard on blades.

So what are they sleeping on now then, bales of straw??

Hasnt any one any ideas yet as to what you could make from a humble pallet? I accept theres a lot you cant do with a pallet; I know that a bathroom made of pallets will look like......a bathroom made of pallets, but then I once saw a cabinet made of bur elm, and it looked just like......a cabinet made of burr elm   I know theres limitations and you probably wont get a high end exclusive piece of furniture out of a pallet, but why not see it as a design challenge? For example I thought possibly I could make a small model of a viking type boat (about 30 x 8 inches with copper nailed planks), or a inuit kayak frame covered with curtain side lorry tarp, as much as anything to show my boy how boat's are made. He loves anything that spins so maybe a small size pole lathe to show him some basic's of turning? Surely someone could think of something??
cheers Jonathan

I agree with Mr_Grimsdale. When I was growing up my dad, god rest his soul, used to make every thing out of old pallets and orange boxes. My mum still has bookcases and stools made over 50 years ago.
