Hi all I have been asked to quote for a door measuring 2000mm by 870mm and a frame which has a rounded top to give the impression the door is gothic style when shut. I am not sure how much to charge and I don't like undermining the pros could some one give me a hint
thanks

If you have a look around on-line at door cuts and custom made doors, you will get an idea of price. Here is an example http://www.orlestoneoak.co.uk/joinery/o ... doors.html

There are plenty of suppliers and depending on spec you could pay retail anywhere from £1,000 to £2,000 for door and frame inc VAT. That is before fitting, which will take a day.

I am not a pro by the way so I can't comment on what a pro would charge, but I have made a few doors and bought in a few doors and it is quite bit of work to make a good quality door and frame if it is for external use. What you make it out of will have quite a bearing, as will the construction type and thickness / width of planks. You can easily spend £500 on materials alone plus locks, hinges and fittings if you are making from solid oak. More if you need it machined for you.

I have only commented because I need to make a similar door myself, but it will probably wait until next spring now. If mine was not such an awkward size I would probably buy one in, to my spec rather than make it, as by the time I have bought the timber and fittings and put three days work into making it, then I am into quite serious time and money.

Thanks for that I notice the Gothic door is only 22mm thick not a lot for an external door. They don't list prices either. I might just put a silly price in.

Having a similar job coming up in the spring I typed "oak door and frame " on fleabay and got many hits and pic and prices, as a guide.
The previous answer by AJP, was a very good one, with an excellent link.
22mm would be for an internal door, basically T&G+ ledges, as the link says
Just price up the frame and door material sizes and add on the labour.
Regards Rodders

Be aware Jewsons are selling 762 wide oak bead &butt internal door for around £90.00,
You're customer may see this mass produced item and jump to the wrong conclusion.

If it helps then I can happily confirm that AJB is pretty spot on with prices - at least down here in the South East/London. A custom external door from me starts at £1000 ex VAT. Then it'll depend on how fiddly/involved the actual door is - panelled, FLB, inlaid, etc. Add the frame and the VAT and there goes your £2k. For fitting I'd charge £330 + VAT then any extras such as Parking, congestion charge etc.

I'm probably going to get murdered by the other tradesmen on here now.....

I don't get this, if you don't know what to charge, either don't quote or be prepared to take a risk on price, but to put in a silly price is daft in my opinion. Your silly price may be still too little or it may be so much you look foolish.
Surely just a bit of material cost research and a good estimate of your time taken will give you a price. You must have some idea of how long it will take, otherwise you are mad to do the project.

I've just made a pair of oak gothic style doors with an arched head and frame. Doors were 58mm thick and insulated in the middle. Will post a picture when I go back this week. We charged about £2000 + vat for door, frame ironmongery and fitting but they are seriously top quality. Took about 5 days plus 4 hours fitting.

Theres a big difference between a t and g arched head door and a framed t and g arched door with insulation etc.

Although it does sounds like your door is square with a square frame but a gothic shape on the stop bead side. I assume with brickwork arch to suit?

plus or minus £1500 +vat would be my guesstimate.

Or, cost of materials + value of whatever your next Wadkin purchase might be :D
