Been making this, simple design, just mitred top and stopped rebated shelf, but difficult to achieve as it weighs a ton!

It's 1.6m long and 44mm thick stock.....

Could not find anywhere better to glue up/test fit

It will have all the exposed edges rounded over, then a wash with VD crystals and maybe OSMO or Wax.

I'll post pics of it finished and on display.

Looking forward to see the results. Always like your work Bloo. How did you cut the mitres?

Goodness! I would have had to have taken a really deep breath before I embarked on mitres that long in such an obvious position! You really are relying on both surfaces staying flat........

Anyway, it looks good! Keep the pictures coming.

Mitres cut on the table saw Wizer, and did a little fettling with a block plane. The fit is very acceptable considering the top and sides have not been put through a wide belt sanding machine to flatten them. It has fitted together much better than expected and it did give me a few sleepless nights thinking of how I'd be able to do the glue up as its so heavy and awkward to move around. 3rd paid job of my new venture and a Dining Table next on the cards :D

Pleased to read you have a few paying jobs on the go. :)

I assume you used some kind of biscuit or spline to reinforce the mitres? That looks like imported oak, which is usually kiln-dried and so, you'd expect there to be less trouble with boards moving and cupping anyway.

You say you're going to round-over the exposed edges (presumably not the mitres?)... Would small chamfers not be better in keeping with the mitred corners?

The Mitres, domino'd, will just have the sharpness removed, ( cut my fingers on them twice today  ) and the round over will be just a little more than that. Not my design, just following instructions  It needs to look used but not abused, though the customer may wish it to be more distressed, they want to see it 1st...

The Oak is American, got fed up trawlling round yards seeing European oak full of shakes, holes and other "character" which was £10 to £20 more a cube. A supplier close by who sells at a reasonable price for good quality would be excellent, but I have not found one yet, for UK KD Oak that is.....

Thanks for the comments, good or bad

Looking good, Bloonose. Your pictures show the advantage of that style of sash cramp - you can bolt them together for big jobs 8)

Cheers

Can't see pics at the moment, but I assume the cramps are Record style with a rectangular steel bar. I very recently helped out my next door neighbour glue up some kitchen worktops...total length was 2.72m  Try doing that with Bessy's :) - Rob

Did the glue up and sanding, just the finish to be applied, the mitres were nice and tight but the thing is soo heavy I cant lift it off the other table!
Other person available tomorrow so as not to do myself or the table an injury.....

Delivered the Table and took a few pic's of it in the shop I made it for, one below. Not my taste but the owner loves it and I may end up making a few more I hope......

Now we can see it freestanding and in use, I actually quite like it. It does look good. :)

If the client is happy then, often, that's all that really matters!

Oh yes very nice. Simple design executed perfected. Also, I do like the look of that lamp. Is it modern or 'old'?

Wizer, the lamp is prob new, I'd need to ask.

It seems very poular in store so far ( 2 days), been asked to quote for a dining table from somebody who loved the colour/texture of it  No complaints from me
