hello folks some of you may remember me asking for help to do this project a few months ago- thank you to all those who offerd their help- in the end DaveL cut a piece of boxwood into a very acurate hexagon on his router thingy.
when i first learnt how to chase threads by watching Allan battys video a few years ago my dad saw a picture of a nut and bolt which Allan had made. ever since then he has pesterd me to make one, so here it is.

the bolt is 3" long by 2 1/4" wide it has a hand chased 18tpi thread.

A huge thank you to DaveL for making this possible

i will post a seperate step by step of it being made as it will be very picture heavy- here it is

I love it! I think it's brilliant. I bet you're very proud of it.

That would look great sitting on my desk. Yet another for the tuit list (probably when I'm in my 60')

"I want one, I want one". Super job George,
and a great gesture from DaveL too. 8) 8) 8)

Say now George, have you got any of those in M33 x 3.5

George,

It has been worth the wait, a wonderful looking piece, I hope your dad is pleased with it. The routing was just a case of setting the machine and turning the handle, its you skill chasing the thread that makes it all work. :D

I am going to print this out and take the picture to show Roy Child who was intrigued by the idea when I spoke to him about it.

This is fantastic George it may sound a silly question but how did you hold the nut and bolt in the lathe to apply the threads.

Dave

Many thanks George for your workshop pics, easy to follow and very proffesional, I will be looking for a thread tool when I go to the Woodex at Leamington on the 24th/25th (next week). But I'm sure its not as easy as it looks.
Thanks again for your time .
Dave

That is really nice.

It reminds me of a lighter my Dad had from his REME days in the early 50's. One of the mechanics took a large bolt, about 3/4", and hollowed it out into a case for a petrol lighter. The thread of the bolt was unscrewed to expose the brass lighter inside. Unfortunately it was nicked during the early 80's.

well after 6 hours of sanding yesterday (day job) I came up witha few ideas for alternative designs.
a spring washer?
a nyloc washer?
hollow out the bolt and thread the head so that you get a secret box- this could be done with a left hand thread.
another one in african blackwood

How about a star washer or a crinkle washer

I like the idea of the secret box and also the one in African blackwood.

How about a wooden spanner to go with the nuts and bolts?

Fantastic look nut, bolt & washer...My wife was amazed it was made
out of wood took some convincing...
It is just one of those items that people can not put down, bet he loved
the finished object... =D> =D>

That is absolutely marvellous! I've seen the one made by Allan Batty at a demo he was doing years ago. This looks great. If I remember correctly Allan's was actually a box and the top of the bolt screwed off the shank, but it was a long time ago and I may be wrong.

Well done again, I'm very envious.

Bob
