Having overcome the traumas with my new drill press, i gave it a good test run today and I am very happy.
Cut a dozen forstner holes in 20 mm walnut (35 mm) and only overloaded it once, and I knew I had put too much pressure on it.

Then I used the giant sanding drum I bought at the same time and rounded my wooden box using a home made kebab holder.

And all in almost silence, compared to my old power drill screeching through its gears.

Cant understand why I didnt buy one a dozen years ago.

Glad it's worked out OK for you in the end.

How did you overcome the problem of the chuck not lining up with the hole in the table?

I didnt. There is no way to do it.
the cast iron is not very thick and even I would hesitate to try to re drill a hole that size without a lathe.

I just have to make sure i have a wooden sacrificial plate under whatever I am drilling.

This little gadget I ordered with the press helps a lot for that.
