Novel use of fret saw (?)

Saw this at a street flea market today; novel (to me) use of fret cut pieces,
in different thicknesses.

That quite unusual work and suppose you could do similar with the tribal tattoo designs if you search google images? not too keen on the colour (think satin black would look nicer) If its going to be fully painted etc then you could use MDF ? I made a clock using some waterproof mdf i got on ebay and the cut edges were very sharp/crisp much more than some other mdf i had kicking about.
